I was driving my Ford 860 this morning. I put it in 3rd gear but it just popped out. What would cause this and how do I fix it?

It is quite common for Ford constant mesh transmissions to pop out of gear under overhauling loads once they are worn.

It is not common for such transmissions to pop out of gear under regular load (pulling) unless it was not fully engaged into gear or quite badly worn.

The only way to eliminate such symptoms is a complete and expensive transmission overhaul to eliminate the thrust play in the countershaft, mainshaft, etc. You may also need to replace some or all of the engagement collars. Such overhaul is prohibitively expensive.

You may be able to minimize such symptoms by replacing the detent springs and balls.

I had the same problem with my old 1010 JD crawler. Replaced the detent rods and things were fine.
