Ford 600 5-speed transmisson cover plate removal

Hello, I am a first time poster to this forum, however have received many useful tips in the previous 8 years for my Ford 600 tractor. However now one of the simpler tasks that I had envisioned is giving me fits... My transmission cover plate is leaking around the edges and also around the gear shift lever. I have removed the bolts, starter wire, and shifter acorn nut, but cannot figure out how to lift the cover off (it raises about an inch before stopping). Would anyone be able to provide me with the next steps in order to get the cover completely off?. I already have new purchased new gaskets and the boot. Thanks in advance..

By any chance is there too much oil in the trans? I thought these are splash/bath lube, given that, its hard to imagine the leak that high up on the trans. But, I'm no expert on the 5 speed either, do know you need to use a little care when taking the cover off, someone will know more on that. The leak has me curious and is why I responded, interesting to see what the deal is here.

1, you probably have too much fluid in the trans. This could be
a problem all by itself.

2, have you actually removed the shift lever?

No, I have not been able to get the shift lever removed, I did not want to apply too much pressure on lifting up on it until I knew for sure how it all fastened together. Once the acorn nut is removed, does it lift straight up?

The gearshift lever slips over a tapered shaft and is held in place by a woodruff key. Put some PB Blaster of equivalent down the shaft, let soak and give to side of the shift lever a solid rap. This should break if free and it then slides upward. Be careful because there is a spring under the lever. Push comes to shove, if you have a puller you can pull the lever off that way, make sure you protect the threads.

The Ford tractor shop manual has a description and
picture (page 177) showing removal of the
transmission cover.

As you perform more maintenance and repair tasks
on your tractor you may want to consider getting a
copy such as at the link below.

I'm with Billy, before you pop the top, check to make sure the transmission is not overfilled. A common problem with the 5 speed is a leak in the hydraulic pressure tube that runs through the bottom of the transmission. When it leaks, oil is pumped from the hydraulic sump and into the transmission and sooner or later out the top. There is a plug on right side near the top of floor board. Oil should be up to that level and not above. I would pull that plug and check it out first.

I wouldn't call it a 5 speed problem, I'd call it a design issue, and
any model using it could see it, not only 5 speeds.

Also, if its leaking o the side, it really could use a new gasket..
but if it is overfull, I would find out why first... that was my point
in the first reply I made.

You are right souNdguy, this problem applies to the 4 speed also. Not one for Henry's better designs.

Check the fluid level first.

Thanks all for the assistance so far. I definitely know that I have a hydraulic leak (most likely into the trans), but it is very minimal and so was relieved to see that the fluid levels were not anywhere near the cover plate. I did fail to mention earlier that the only time the cover plate leaks is when I have been running running the tractor for a period of time. So for now, I have removed the cover plate and can see that the gasket is probably original, several cracks around it which explain the slight leaking from there while it is running, however my biggest leak is coming from where the shift lever assy. passes through the plate onto the back side. I have included a picture so that you can see specifically what I am talking about, but I am not sure what I can do to stop this leaking since this is a pressed on assy and no gaskets are between the upper/lower side of the cover and the bracket. Also, the round part that passed through the cover spins in circles, so I am afraid to put gasket sealer in that slight crack 1/16" in case it breaks free and starts spinning again. Has anyone ever run into this issue before and know of a way to stop it from leaking?

You fix the hyd leak that overfills the trans! Oil level in the trans should be just around the running boards. If its leaking out the shifter you are way, way, way, way overfull!!!!!

No, my level is fine, it is way down by the running boards. When I say hydraulic leak, I'm talking about every couple years I need to add just a little hydraulic fluid. The shifter leak that I'm trying to fix here only develops after I have been running the tractor an hour or so and the splashing around inside of the transmission fluid has had a chance to start seeping out that shifter seam where the arrows are.

(quoted from post at 11:27:10 02/09/15) Hmm, never seen any of my 5 speeds leak at the shifter

My tractor is doing the same thing. Did you figure it out? I don't think it's pressure tube. Mine only leaks when I manipulate the shifter. The hydraulic and transmission oil levels are fine. The exploded view of the shifter shows a seal. Could this be the problem? Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think it's pressure tube.

A leaking tube is a pattern answer I fell for it my bad I should have di my own homework

Yes, my problem is that the hydraulic fluid is leaking into the transmission and eventually raising the level to where it leaks when the shifter is manipulated. I have yet to tackle the issue of finding out how to fix the hydraulic fluid leak, have just been draining the transmission as needed to keep the fluid at a respectable level... .and then of course adding more hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic fluid reservoir.
