1966 ford 4000 weak pto

Hi ya'll! I got '66 4000 with an sos tranny and the pto just seems a little weak. It chews up pretty good with the 72" tiller but sometimes it just stops spinning. It's not the clutch on the tiller, the pto just can't power through. Any ideas?

PTO engagement cable adjustment may too slack. Other than that you've got clutch problems.

Here's a procedure for adjustment I posted in January:

It's likely just a PTO control cable adjustment, but could be worn clutches or lack of hydraulic pressure.

Here's the way I like to adjust that cable, engine not running:

1. Remove the conduit nut at the transmission cover.
2. Fully engage the PTO control.
3. Remove the jam nut that secures the PTO control to the dash.
4. Loosen the upper conduit nut.
5. Making sure to maintain the fully engaged position of the control handle, turn it counter clockwise until the conduit is snug against the transmission cover fitting.
6. Ascertain your adjustment by attempting to pull the conduit away from the transmission fitting. You should not be able to move it without extreme pressure.
7. Replace and/or tighten all hardware.
