Need help troubleshooting the tach & tach drive system. Problem - tach doesn't move off 0 from idle to WOT - With cable end off of the motor adapter is square and seems to lock into square hole on motor... if I take cable end off off the adapter and turn it by hand the tach turns if I [u:c298814d4b]keep[/u:c298814d4b] pressure on the end (pushing it into the cable jacket) reconnect it and it works for a minute then tach starts to slip back to 0. Can anyone suggest if I should start with a #1) new cable? OR #2) disassemble dash and look for trouble there? OR #3) replace all?, OR #4) something else I haven't suggested? Thanks in advance for the ideas.

Sounds like the cable has broken, and by pushing it
in, you can temporarily make it work. Try pulling it
out, and see how long a piece you get.

couple of thoughts... there is a keeper or ring at the top that keeps the cable high enough in the cable housing to properly engage the tach... this ring can and will slip and let the cable run too low and not connect to the tach. especially on the cheap replacement cables. factory used a metal ring on the top of the cable end to securely hold it in the correct place. Lots of aftermarket cables use a plastic ring that slips.

secondly.. the 2600 has a shorter cable at the engine that is about 4 inches long.. it can wear the square end off and slip where it engages in the oil pump... its under the cover where the tach cable attaches to the engine. Loosen the bolt somewhat and twisting will remove the whole assembly and let you change the smaller cable. the bottom end can be worn out. sometimes you can grab the small cable with a pair of needle nose, but you usually have to remove the oil filter to work on this part.
