144 diesel wines

One of the guys at our club bought a light industrial ford 2000. It has a 144 diesel in it. The tractor starts and runs good but has a load winning noise coming from somewhere on the engine. The previous owner told him it's had that sound for the last 20 year. It's pretty load considering I don't hear too good anymore. Can't do the video thing, I'm just not that savvy. Any clue what it might be?

Later 144-172 diesels have a counter balancer in the bottom driven by a gear made on the crank, the balancer gears and shafts run on bushings that can wear allowing the balancer gears to no mesh properly and make a whining noise.
The gas engines don't use a counter balancer so you wont hear this whining coming from them.
Later 4 cyl diesels also have a counter balancer, the one on my 5000 with 233 diesel is whining and needs to be addressed, it's using a little oil and most likely a full overhaul is in it's future.

Word of caution, the counter balancer is timed to the crank gear, it's simply lining up a mark on the crank gear with a mark one of the balancer gears, the balancer gears also have timing marks that properly time the two gears together.
If the counter balancer gears or not properly timed or the counter balancer isn't timed to the crank gear properly it will cause the engine to be seriously out of balance.
