Ford 600 charging problem

It is original generator 6v + gnd. system. I put a new regulator on it (from this site sponsor) and it charged a few minutes then quit. Would charge if I put power to field. I called customer service and they graciously sent me another regulator, same thing, charged a few minutes and quit, will charge if I field the generator. Any ideas other than start over and make it 12v?

ou do know that a normal situation is substantial charge after start up, to replace the dump into starter and then taper off to nearly nothing after a few minutes, right?

Sounds like the generator and regulator are behaving normally. You might also turn on any lights or other load and see if the amp meter dips(discharges). When you shut off the lights, etc. see if the amp meter needle moves over to the charge side

The first new regulator charged about 7.4 to 7.5 volts then stopped and the voltage dropped to about 6.5 which is what the battery was showing when stopped. The second one charged 7.1 to 7.2 then dropped to static voltage. I did load the battery with a load tester to see if it would start charging again, it did not.

Problem is on it's way to being solved. Stopped by a salvage yard and got a GM10 alternator. Got it mounted, just need to wire it, change the battery to a 12v and add a ballast resistor.

hat isn't 'solving', more like 'avoidance'.
But it will help the mental state, result in less hair pulling, and probably result in a happy tractor. :D

I know, just frustrating as he!! the off and on charging and it only started when it was in the mood and the battery was fully charged. I went through the ignition and starting systems and it still started just sometimes, runs like a fine watch when it starts. It's fixed now, got it all wired, turned it on, hit the button and it fired almost instantly.
