Sickle mower

Bought this New Holland 451 sickle mower yesterday morning for $100, it is missing a bolt or pin that moves the cutter blade back and forth, I put a bolt and a sleeve in it to mow around the pond, worked good till my make shift fix worked loose, what is the correct part needed to secure the cutter blade, may go back and get the John Deere sickle mower and resale it, he's wanting $20 for it, the pitman arm is rotten on the Deere mower.

I do not remember the cost of the bushing and bolt that goes in that sickle mower but NH does in fact have the parts new. I did the triangle sort of plates and bushings on a friend NH451 not long ago. Be sure to check those plates since the holds tend to get bad and cause odd problems when they do

In the last picture you can see the size of the hole on head of the cutter blade, before I put a bolt through it I cut a piece of pipe and put in there to shim it and then put bolt through but it didn't hold up for about 20 minutes, cant find an online parts diagram , I can buy a parts book online but figured some of ya'll could help me with some wisdom before I ordered a parts book..

By the way the bushing for it are a bit longer then the hole like in the sickle bar it self and ride in the triangle plate so the bolt just holds thing together but the bushing is what takes the load. The one I rebuilt for my fiend had all the holes egged out and the bushing where out of round

OP, your seller must be living in a time warp; those mowers are $1500 at the low end and $4200 at the high!

Don't know anything about them, but might be somebody to check....

I always thought the sickles were pretty neat, less chance of sparks and set fire to everything, nothing spinning at bullet speed to fling junk. But new, small ones seem rare...

The family don't care what anything is worth, their just trying to sell as much as they can to clean up old farm land, something shows up in the weeds or woods every couple of days and they ask me if I want it, always pay what their asking. I know I've been getting some deals but they don't care about money so I haven't offered to pay more, once property gets cleaned up of farm related tools and implements I think the land will be sold. Got my eyes on several implements but have to manage those purchases from payday to payday.

Even though they don't use a lot of sicle bars around here. they still sell for $1500. There is a bearing that goes in there and a special bolt that takes up the play. new blade for $100 and then u just have to buy the bolt

NH 451 sickle bar mower is one of the best ever made and are still made today.
I bought a used one back in the 80's, rebuilt it in the 90's and although we mainly use disc mowers for haying nowdays we still use the 451 for small lots and trim work.
In good grass hay it will cut as fast as my disc mower, around 6.5 mph in 6th gear on my 4000, in heavy hay I mowed in 5th gear. If the wobble section is in good shape and it has good sections and guards it's one cutting machine.

Adjust the yoke stops to set the main frame at 15" high to the bottom of the frame when level, make sure the end of the bar has a couple inches of lead, my brake away link had so much wear the bar was trailing and it wouldn't cut properly, there's also shims at the main pivot to help set proper lead. There's an adjustment for setting the tilt angle of the bar, having the sections level to slightly nose up works best.

A operators manual would be good to have, all settings and adjustments are in there.
