timing a 3000 gas

I have advanced the timing on my 73 3000 as far as I can move the dis and it still needs more. Perhaps some PO has had the dis out. Can i remove the dis cap and lift the dis far enough to advance it a tooth? Are there any pitfalls to watch out for? It sure is a tight place to work. Any advice appreciated.

There's 2 clamps on that. The slotted mount with the 1/2" headed bolt securing the dizzy actually clamps to the distributor body. The real limiting factor is the vac advance. It will only allow so much movement before it runs into the intake manifold or the back of the front timing cover.

If you pop the cap & rotor off, you can finagle it out to jump a tooth if you think you need it.

I have a 72 2000 FIL got it from a stable that never seemed to run quite right. I got into the vacuum advance and found a stack of washers someone put in that kept it from working. Much better after that.

Sounds like it sucked the fuel filter from the sediment bowl right through the carb and into the vacuum advance. :D :D :D :D
