Ford 641 starter solenoid

I've replaced the starter solenoid and the tractor doesn't start with the starter button. I've replaced the starter button and it still doesn't start. The only way I get it to fire up is to jump the inner two posts on the starter solenoid. Any ideas? I'm thinking that it is still the starter button, my luck is that I got a bad one still.

the solenoid and wiring match what I have on my 801. That tractor is working fine. Both have been converted over to 12 volts neg ground systems.

There are solenoids that look the same that are wired differently internally. Where did you get the solenoid and what part number was it?

NAPA has schematics of solenoids they sell in their catalog. Helps when numerous look the same on the outside, even with the same number of terminals. Beats having to take an ohm meter to the store with you.

Just because the solenoid looks the same it could well not be the same. Solenoids made for cars and truck used a hot wire to made them work but the ones made for the old ford tractor used a ground so if you have the wrong one it will not work

Sounds like that may be the case, I couldn't get any tractor specific solenoids, so I got one for a 1959 Ford F100. I can keep jumping the teminals until I order off the correct one.

If you have an O'Reilly's or NAPA auto parts tore in your area they can in fact get you the correct one

That solenoid has a grounded base and needs a hot wire to the S terminal to engage, you need a solenoid with an insulated base
to use the start button on the transmission.

I had gotten the solenoid at Autozone, made an order to this website for the correct one already. Will price Napa for the future. Thanks for the suggestiion.

Cannot say how your auto zone is but the one we have in town is like trying to buy a tractor at a motorcycle dealer or in other words worthless
