4000SU Clutch

Can someone tell me what the difference is in the bronze puck type clutch disc and the fiber disc?
I have removed the engine for a rebuild and it has a single stage clutch with the puck type disc.
Grease on it, so I am replacing it. Which one should I use?
Thanks

I prefer the fiber type clutch as what you call the puck type disc is designed for quick engagement and is difficult to feather the clutch.

I prefer the fiber clutch myself, it's not as grabby, I have a fiber clutch in my 4000SU, 4000, 4500 and 5000.
If you have grease on the clutch now's a good time to replace the transmission input shaft seals while you have the engine off.

"Puck type", a.k.a. cerametallic or button style disc has a higher coefficient of friction and will grab quicker and hold tighter. Very hard on flywheels and pressure plates. "Fiber type", a.k.a. rag or organic style disc is easier to feather and much easier on pressure plates and flywheels.

Thanks for the input. I will go back to the fiber disk. The pressure plate looks fine. The grease appears to have been coming out of the pilot bearing hole. No doubt someone filled it with grease when it was last replaced.

When we replace a woven disc where the puck disc was in, we also replace the PP, I highly recommend that you do the same,
also if you have a rebuilder close by get one from them as a set. The Asian junk is hit or miss

Those metallic button type discs were usually found on the industrial models - 3400, 4400, 4500, etc that were subject to hard, heavy use - back and forth loader work, etc. For an ag model that isn't being used as hard the organic disc is much smoother.
And yes they will eat flywheels.
I had a 3400 with that disc in it that the flywheel was grooved at least 1/16" deep.
Clutch rebuilder charged me extra to surface it. Pressure plate was deeply worn too but I just put a new one in.

That was going to be me next question. Can I use the same pp with the woven disk? This clutch has not been in this tractor very long and was working ok. The pp looks new.
