Ford 800/850 - No start, no gas from carb?

Hi, my Ford 850 just recently started to run poorly, sputter, die when given any gas, and now will not start. It ran perfectly
for the last year. New points, condenser, coil, ignition switch, and when the problem occured I completely rebuilt the carb.
Plenty of gas to the carb, but plugs do not get wet. I even bought a brand new carb and still no gas from the carb to the
engine. Plenty of suction from the carb, and from the intake manifold when the carb is off. Timing was static timed at 5 deg.
BTDC. Nothing, not even wanting to start. 6 Volt system and it turns over fine. I took the valve cover off and all valve
appear to open and close properly when the engine is turned over. None are stuck open or closed. Spraying starter fluid into
the carb intake will not even begin to start the engine.

Does anyone have any suggestion of what to look for now? I am so frustrated by this problem.

Did you unscrew the plug at the bottom of carbaratur and verify "good fuel flow?
Could be a plugged screen in the elbow on the carb. from the fuel line. Unscrew it and verify that the hidden screen is clear. Then check all the way to the tank.

Static advanced the timing to 26 deg. BTDC, advanced the cam and then rotated the distributor so that the points were just opening on no. 1 per the book. Got it to start and run, but it is a bit rough but it at least idles now at 450 and seems to run up to 2,300 rpm. I need to get a timing light now and set it exactly. For some reason the timing all of a sudden just got way off and I think that was the problem that caused the sputtering, backfire and then no start.

These are simple engines, but on occasions they are smarter than my simple mind!
 
Thanks Charles, yes, I did that and fuel was definitely getting to the carb, but it did not seem to make into the combustion chamber (at least at the right time). See my later post on timing issues that just all of sudden appeared out of nowhere.
 
Always trouble shoot then parts NEVER the other way around.

#1 check that you have a good blue/white spark form the center wire on the distributor cap and that it jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more. Then check that you have that same spark at each of the spark plug wires. No spark or a weak spark means no run. And from what your saying it is likely that you have no spark or a weak spark
 
Thanks Old, I had replaced the electrical components when I bought the tractor last year because it was missing a bit. I ran great for a year. It still had excellent spark at all of the plugs and gas was getting plenty of gas into the carb. The issue apparently was that all of the sudden my timing went off, which started to sputter and then die the engine. It appeared as if the engine was not getting gas. Plugs were not even getting wet. I do not know how this happened, but it did. I advanced the timing a great deal and got it running and it appears to run fine now. I still have not timed it with a light yet, but so far, so good.

Strange, and it had me completely baffled. I have been working on old Fords for 20 years now and have never seen this before.
 
Been decades since I have used a timing light. Ya some say you can not time an engine by ear or feel but I have been for years. Ya they will not be right on per spec but they will be right on for best over all power if you know what your doing when you time by ear
