8340 Fuel Issue

Hi all, I have had fuel contamination issues on my 1995 Ford 8340. The tractor started lacking power and wouldn't rev flat out, so I cleaned lots of gunge from the sediment bowl, changed the spin on filter, blew the primer pump out (it was clean), cleaned the brass elbow tap and blew back to tank. I bled her up, it revs flat out now but she still lacked power when under acceleration. I have checked all fuel pipe connections are tight and it doesn't give any symptoms of drawing in air such as poor starting or erratic revving.

I removed the cap on the end of the injection pump to clean the inlet gauze filter out but it doesn't look like pumps I have seen before on 4000's!

Has anyone got a better diagram or a photo than the NH parts diagram (attached) which doesn't look correct. My cap (70) has a female groove which drives onto the top of (66) - much like a screwdriver and slot. I didn't go any further with removing the filter, so I screwed (70) back in, reassembled and tried to bleed her but she doesn't seem to have enough fuel at the injectors now.

I was very careful not to disturb any of the pressure regulating valve when I removed the cap but I think something must be wrong now, any ideas?

Blowing back into the tank doesn"t necessarily solve a problem of having crud in the tank blocking the outlet strainer. If there s lot of crud in the tank,it will just re-clog the strainer. If the tank is cruddy, you need to clean the tank out. Crud can also restrict the passages in the filter head so that changing the filter doesn"t cure the problem.

Since you know that this started with fuel contamination, I would be going at cleaning a little more aggressively. Your lower tank could have literally gallons of the same gunge as you got out of the filter bowl. I think that the first order of business would be to drain the lower tank.
