Can someone tell me how to adjust the front tires on a 960 ford. If I line the left tire up even with the back tire then my right tire is way to far to the right or vise versa so how do I get then straight thanks norm

You dont mention if this is the ford factory wide front or something aftermarket like a Swartz. However in either case, all the geometry for toe adjust is purely mechanical linkage. Look at the short draglinks to each pitman arm, if for instance this is a ford wfe. Have you changed fa spacing?

Any bent or damaged parts? IE. Bent pitman arm?

Does you wide front end look something like this? Not sure if the 961's and the 960's had the same factory wide front but I think they were at least pretty similar? Doesn't sound to me like what you have is like this though as what you're describing would be pretty hard to do on this.

Its a factory wide front. What I have found is the right side tie rod isn't out far enough. The left side tie rod is set in the 2nd slot. the right side is in the first slot so if I can get it to move out to the 2nd slot then it looks as though it would be fine. I have removed the bolt but so far I cannot get it to come out anymore. don't know if I need to take the complete arm off or if I could soak it and knock it out. Anyone have any experience on these thanks norm

With no pics to see condition hard to say how stuck it is. Soak with penetrant, tap around sleeve to loosen joint, more penetrant. Worst / rusted ones will likely need heat.

If you can see it the left wheel is in line with the rear but the right wheel is turned out quite a bit, had this tractor for 8 years. never did notice it before. thanks norm

The slots aren't intended for alignment, they are only for setting the track in or out. You adjust the axle a hole or two, and adjust the tie rod the same. What you need to do is get it as close as you can by the best slot, then loosen the clamp near the end of the rod, pull ball joint from the arm, then adjust the rod in or out until the ball joint goes into the arm.

I'd think that much toe out would have been noticed before now if it's always been like that.
The steering arms appear to be at the same angle, have you hit something with the drivers side wheel lately and maybe sheared the key where the steering arm attaches to the spindle.

I said drivers side because you indicated the left wheel being inline and the right wheel towed out, but looking at the picture the left wheel is the one towed out
I always refer to the sides of the tractor when your setting in the seat looking forward. In your case looking at the picture the left side of the tractor is in the right side of the photo.

There is only one factory wfe.

You've been asked a good question, and given 2 good answers on adjustment. Time for observation and reply.

Norm, another thought is that since it is off quite a lot and you haven't noticed it before, That perhaps you hit something and the arm has turned on the splines of the vertical shaft. You could check it for tightness if you haven't already.

front and back are pretty close to the same width. I removed the tie rod assembly from the tractor. End that screws out came out fine but having no luck removing the side for the wheel. I don't think its screwed in but not positive. have no clue why it is so long. haven't found any part for it on the net. Took it to the shop. They heated the heck out of it but to no avail. I know I will need the ball joint on the drivers side as I twisted the bolt head off. probably would just buy the whole assembly if some one had one but it has to be on the 2nd indention. I think both sides same. any help appreciated. thanks norm

I have had this tractor since 97. overhsuled it in 98, put 300 hours on it since so I really don't use it that much but this month I decided to brush hog a 7 acre track that hasn't been mowed in 5 years. some times I had to turn it hard to miss a tree. used the brakes to turn it sharper and noticed the front end was sliding. never did notice it before. that's when I pulled it into the shop to check it and give everything s good greasing. have no idea why I didn't notice it before. guess it always worked for me in what ever I was doing. hopefully I can fix it right. thanks. norm

From looking at it I agree with you. only problem is the ball joint wont slide out. sounds easy but I have removed the assembly and took it to the local machine shop and they and I thought it would come right out after heating it up. wrong it still wont budge. thought I might find some parts for it but haven't found any yet. thanks norm
