Replace Front Spindle on Ford 801

Can someone give me some tips on replacing this? The threads are stripped so I have to replace the front spindle on my tractor. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

threads stripped.. on the axle? How bad?

in the short term, if there are any threads at all left, you can use a 2 piece squeezum nut.

Or, just jack the front end up, pull the hub off, and then do one of the next 3 options.

weld up , grind to profile, and then recut the threads oem.

braze up, grind to profile, and recut the threads oem.

carefully grind down, and recut the threads to the next undersized you can. Sure it's a little weaker.. but should work a long
time.

BTDT.. all 3 work. even works on the rear axle.. have seen them cut and re threaded coarse thread.. QUITE undersized and still
in operation.

like this. I just did one a month ago or so.

Notice I used cardboard and a rag and tape to protect the spindle from weld splatter and to make sure the grinder didn't jump up on it.

The spindle had some surface rust on it, so i let it take a bath in an electrolysis tank. Out of the tank it had a black oxide on it that looks worse than it was. the next to last pic shows it buffed out. It was a spare arm for a friend.. not the best quality one.. but it worked in a pinch.

I didn't include the picture where I welded it up, but it was welded up, then i recut it back to original size.

PS.. take a piece of copper hose wire and fold it in half to double the size and shove that in the cotter pin hole... it keeps it from being welded closed. you will have to clean the hole out with a small rat tail file followed by a drill . do it in a vice with a drill press or you can wallow the hole out or break the bit doing it by hand.
same deal on the slot. lay a piece of doubled copper in it, tapped in.. then you take the side of a flat file to clean the slot. the copper just prevents weldover..

I purchased one of those nuts and put is on. It allowed me to get the tractor back to the shop. My big question is how much of a task is it to install a new spindle?

Nice job, but I don't have those type of workman skills. I was thinking about replacing the spindle entirely. Thoughts.

Jack the axle up, disconnect the steering arm and drop the spindle out, that's all there is to it.
Replace the lower thrust bearing and it's also a good time to replace the bushings in the axle drop tube if their worn.

You really need to get a shop manual, I-T or one on CD

spindle only? 10 minutes... but I wouldn't do spindle only.. but that's me.

all you do is drop it out.. put new one in.. put hub and steering arm on.

if you own an 801.. you might want to start cultivating those type of skills. they aren't terribly hard to learn...

Was way cheaper for me to burn a welding rod and then spin a die vs buying a new spindle...

(quoted from post at 18:55:37 08/24/16) very simple job, where are you located ? I am in Va and Have a good used spindle
Boss
I live in Charlottesville, Va. I order a new spindle yesterday from a shop in Ohio. I used them all the time. I rebuilt the tractor basically from the ground up using them, but a friend did most of the work. Thanks for the help. Please let me know if you have other stuff for a 801. I always need parts.
