1959 ford 801 gas, quit last week, 2 problems, 1st one the little copper wire going thru th dist, was almost broken, thin enough causing fire problems, 2nd one, took the hose from carb to air cleaner off, and it was almost totally filled with gas, so I bought a carb refurb kit. And a new copper wire for the dist, plus new points, rotor, condenser, and rebuilt each item.

Now tractor turns over, but only backfires through carb, everyone once in a while it almost runs. Like its out of time, never took the dist out of motor, but I went ahead and brought the cylinder up to top, match it to zero on the flywheel and it aligns with number one plug on dist. Still no joy. Also anyone else have a problem with breaking the rotor buttons, every since I changed the cap and center cap and the button, you don't get all that damn well lined up, it's snaps the rotor button just lickety split.

Anyways, and ideas I haven't thought of yet?

Cheap cap and rotor will cause that broken rotor problem. Did you get them at TSC?? If you broke a rotor it could well have cracked the cap and if humid then that could be why you have a no run and back fire problems

If you don't have the dust cover/shield installed under the cap, it may allow the cap to set low enough to allow rotor to hit it. Be sure firing order is 1243CW

Has all the components in the dist, bought through this site, have more coming, as i am going to try it again, the cap and dust cover has always been a pain to get installed correctly, they just don't go on easy, been thinking about buying a whole new dist.

Ok, so today I disassembled the dist, it now has no up or down slop, also noticed the oil spline hex rod is slightly bent, can only buy those through just 8ns site, but I can't get mine out f the bottom of the dist, so I this point I'm stuck with it, I have to go pick up a new side cover gasket tomorrow, as I took the side cover off to watch the push rods t make sure I was getting correct open at top dead center on the timing marks and user one cylinder at top of shaft, when I do this's, the roto is no longer point at no 1 plug, ut 180 out, have no idea what caused this, as up until I rebuilt the dist, I hadn't pulled it out yet. Ut now that the engine is setting in no 1 position, s soon as the paint dries on the dist I will put it ack in and align no plug to the new position.

You did an awful lot of work just to avoid re-plugging the wires in different distributor cap holes.

Not really, the up and down slop was contributing to the breaking of the rotor, will be putting back together tomorrow will let you all know what
happens next

est wishes. Hope all runs nice.

JOY!

All ack together running smooth, no more broken rotor buttons, taking the slop out of the dist made the difference, set number one plug up and fired right off.
