FORD 3000 Diesel Purchase and Photos

Thanks guys for all your input. I really like this tractor so far. It runs so smooth and strong and seems tight all over. The tractor was always shedded when not in use and the original paint shows very well. Ultradog, this 8 speed does have LPTO which I am happy about.

I included some photos. Notice the amount of (original ??) paint on the clutch and brake pedals. There is no evidence of this tractor being re-painted but I'll keep looking. I really like the look of the 7.50 x 16 front tires instead of the 6.00 x 16. The rears are 13.6 x 28. No remote valve.

Today I spoke with a friend who co-owned a Ford tractor dealership back in the late 50's through the 80's. We discussed what brand of tires came on the later 3000's. He told me that Ford switched from Firestone/Goodyear rears to Armstrong rears around 1973 or so. He said the fronts were either Armstrong or BF Goodrich. My tractor is a 1974 and has Armstrong rears and BF Goodrich fronts. Could this tractor possibly have the original tires?? Seems hard to believe.

Can't wait to put it to work this coming spring!!!

you have a museum piece. wow!! its practically unused. and yes, you probably have original tires on it. Thats about a clean as I have seen and not been in a show room. Your gonna love it.

Original seat, I suspect too. Amazing how bright orange that tach needle is.. hasn't seen a lot of sunlight.

Interesting to see 7.50x16 factory tires.. I didn't think that was an option, but maybe it came later. Great find!

You'll be happy with that one! Very nice looking 3000.
What's the dealership name on teh stickers? Can't quite make it out in the pics. Just wondering if it's one of the dealers I'm familiar with.

I assume that is the tractor you were asking about a few days ago and said the owner was asking $5000 firm. All I can say is that I would have given that in a hearbeat for that tractor! Granted, nobody wants to pay "too much" for anything and there are some shady characters out there selling junk with a rattle can paint job for way too much but from the pictures, you can tell that is as original and unmolested of a tractor of that vintage that you will find. If you maintain it and don"t "bang it up" you will get your money back at any moment you wish to sell it. Including to me... keep me in mind when the day comes.

Thanks guys for all the nice comments. I guess you could say Christmas came early for me this year. In case anyone is wondering, the tractor will be used during non-winter months only running a 7 foot finishing mower and a 6 foot rough cut mower (approx. 100 hrs per season). It will be sharing grounds keeping duty with a 881 gas that is of the same original quality of the recently purchased 3000.

Fordfarmer, the dealer sticker says Converse Equipment - Whitewater, Wisconsin

Can't say I know anyone who's worked at Converse Equipment, or even been there...but I have at least heard of them.

That's a real score.
Might be the cleanest original I've ever seen.
Original seat, original steering wheel. And yes, look at how orange the tach needle is.
The rear tires look small for 13.6
I would have guessed 12.4.
Maybe the oversized fronts make them look smaller.
I am wondering about the mushroom on the air intake though.
Original?
I usually associate that style with the 3600 and later fords. The older ones had the round top style. When did that change?
That tractor is 37 years old. Will probably easily go another 37.
Have fun.

(quoted from post at 01:16:59 12/07/11) the air cleaner cover looks like a repop.. still darn nice machine!

Dunno. My 1970 4000su has one that looks just like that, and from what I can tell it's original. It's certainly every bit as beat up as the rest of the machine.. The 1966 3400 has the rounded mushroom one.

I thought the mushroom type cap came out when the 2 piece plastic grill came out (1968-1975). The 600 series (2600, 3600, etc) still had the mushroom cap but was black in color to go with black mesh grill. Not positive though.

Brian

I am going to make an assumption here! The cap pictured is designed to create a swirl effect in the air flow (note the two directional louvers in the sides of the cap). I wonder if these caps were exclusive to tractors with oil bath air cleaners directly below the intake. My brother's '72 5000 has that arrangement. My xx10 series tractors have dry type air cleaners, and had "mushroom" caps. They now have extensions & pre-cleaners.

The inlets on the bottom are angled, making the
air swirl as in comes in; the slits in the sides
are there to let dirt (thrown to the outside of
the air stream by its weight) be thrown back out
before it gets to the oil bath or dry filter.
Not exclusive to oil bath air cleaners. My 4600
came with the same type of cap, but in black. My
7000 had the mushroom with mesh on the bottom.
Both now have precleaners with the removable/cleanable bowls. 7000 also has an
extension.
On other tractors I've owned... both 3000's ('74? and '67), the
5200 (late '68 ) and I think one 5100 ('65) had that style of cap.
The other 5100 (early '68 ) had a precleaner and extension when
I got it... probably added at the same time it got
the M&W turbo. Don't remember what the 6600 had.

Nice looking tractor! Yes, those could be the original rear tires with that few of hours. I have a pair of 11.2x28 firestones on my 8n that my dad put on in april of 1973, they still have atleast 50% tread. My nieghbor has a IH 1486 tractor he bought new in the fall of '74, it still has the original rear tires and duals to! He uses it for heavy tillage.

Like the old saying about eating crackers in bed - I wouldn't kick that tractor out of my garage for having the wrong air intake.
Im not sure when the change occured.
I would say it is better than the old round top jobs. Cyclone air filters are pretty effective.
My money is that it's not correct for a 74 though.
Be fun to get to the bottom of that one.
Tractor is a true sweetheart Brian.

I just spent a few minutes on "Tractor Data" looking at pictures of Ford 1xxx thru 1x10 series 2 tractors, and found most all had the same cap. Even saw that cap on a Super Major 5000!

Edit: I have come to the conclusion that they were OEM, or at least prevalent! JMHO
