Well if you found the serial number you should also see the model number just above it but if you did not really find the serial number well then

If that is indeed the serial number it is a 1958. If it is really a high crop it is very valuable. I don't believe that I have ever seen a picture of a 901 high crop. 900s only.
Here is a pic of my 961.

showcrop - 23644 could be a hundred series serial number from 1955 or an '01 serial number from 1958. They started the serial number ranges over at 1001 for both series.

Gary - As the others have said, if you found the serial number then the model number should be right above the serial number.

Sorry - brain fart on the starting number for the hundred series, but that serial number would still be a 1955 hundred series or a 1958 '01 series, or even a 1963 thousand series.

The model number should be stamped just above the serial number. Visually, the biggest difference will be the grille. Fenders are different, too, but a lot of 960 fenders have bit the dust and been replaced with 961 fenders.

Most early 900 series will be narrow front. Later the 900 could be had with either 2-wheel narrow front, single wheel tricycle or wide front. All 901 series had all 3 front end options.

(quoted from post at 12:25:54 07/28/13) Just picked up a Ford high crop.how can I tell if its a 960 or 961 serial number applies to both.23644.

Wow...two posts about "high crops" in one night.

From my research a true "high crop" is extremely rare. What you most likely have is a 9xx series row crop.

On the port side of the tractor (left facing forward from the seat) there is a flat area just aft of the starter. There should be two rows of numbers stamped (not cast) there. Top row is the model #, bottom row is serial number. Take a look and post what you find.

Hello,

I am looking at purchasing a 1958 ford 961 that is supposedly a true high crop. How can I verify that it is a true high crop? Also are these actually a "rare" find or is it fairly common? Any Assistance would be great.

Thanks,

The two most notable differences are that the rear tires/wheels are 38 inch and the front spindles are approx. 18 inches while the standard row crops are only about nine inches.
