3000 lift question

Today I hooked up a tiller to my 71 3000 diesel and the lift arms will only go high enough to barely get it off the ground. Haven't noticed an issue with the lift per say but wondering just how high the lift arms should go when all the way up. I tried searching but didn't find anything really helpful.

That is what I would expect but am trying to determine if my 3000 has a lift problem or not. In a bit I'm going to remove the Tiller and hook up my flail mower. Will see how high the lift arms go with no weight. That might tell me something?

OK, looks like I have an issue with my lift..
Without anything on the 3pt the top arms move up at least 5 inches higher than they will with my tiller or flail mower hooked up. I didn't measure it but this translates to what 12 or so inches difference in the lower arms.

I looked on Youtube but didn't find anything on the thousand series. Know I will have to pull the lift cover but not sure what to expect or what parts I should order before hand. I do have the Ford manual but haven looked at it for this issue yet.

Where to start?

Not much you can do on the outside other than see if there's a difference between draft and position control. It's been several years since I've rebuilt the lifts on two of my 000 series, but no special tools are needed, I did all of the adjustments using a set of calipers. While the tops off is a good time to replace the piston seals.

Your problem could be in the internal linkage. There is a basic setting of the draft and position control done with the lever and arms in the max down position but it is done with the lift cover off and upside down. Before you get into it eliminate air in the system, low pressure or a weak pump. Get a service manual if you don't have one. I&T FO-31 has served me well.

Thanks Mike, will put up with it the way it is till it gets cold and mowing season is over. Not looking forward to tearing into it but going to need it working properly next spring.

If it will pick it up off the ground I would say its a lift linkage problem and more than likely the cam follower pin is worn. It can be proved but I am not sure its worth the trouble.

If you wanted to play and can get the lift leaver past the stop that will prove its a command issue with the linkage and not a hydraulic issue.

UPdate !

I went out and looked at my 3000 to see how EZ it would be to get the lift quadrant past the upper stop. To my surprise it has two stops it was EZ to pull the quadrant leaver out past the first FACTORY stop and move it to the last stop  If yours has two stops moving it past the first stop should at the least tell you sum'N.

If you pull the lift cover rig a hoist so you can pull it straight up at least a foot. There is a vertical tube from the right front corner of the cover down to where the pressure line goes in. Easy to damage. I muscled mine off by hand and was lucky. Yours being a 3000 will have a shorter tube if it has the flow control knob but be careful with it.

Friend of mine is going to bring his engine hoist over when I get ready to do the deed.
Thanks for the heads up on that tube.

Yep, mine has two stops. the question is why will it go all the way up without a load but only go 1/2 way with a load.

Just a shot in the dark, it could be the load applied to the top link moves the internal linkage enoufh to affect lift when loaded.
