OT: Pellet Stove

I'm thinking about replacing my wood burner with a pellet stove, anyone have any suggestions, brand, pros or cons?

My Step Son has one and he burned oil last winter because it was cheaper then pellets. The first yr he had it he didn't by quite enough ahead, then half way thru the heating season there was a shortage of pellets and he had a hard time finding some. My thought has always been I can't make pellets but I can always cut and split wood. I do realize that burning wood is a lot of work and it can be messy as well the tools you need and space it takes so it isn't for everyone.

my dad has a wood burner in his basement and tried a pellet stove in his garage one winter.

The pro a pellet stove has over a wood burner is its much more automatic. Yes you have to dump pellets in, but after that it's controlled via the thermostat. Wood burner you have to control the draft to get proper flame (though I heard some wood burners have gotten more advanced, don't know about those.)

Biggest con is buying pellets. you have to plan ahead and store them, or try to find them mid-season. They aren't cheap and they aren't all created equal. I hear in some areas where they are very popular you can buy in bulk and get them delivered, not around us though.

Dad still has the wood burner but pellet stove is long gone.

I went from $2200 in oil when the price was approaching $4/gal to $900 in pellets and $400 in oil the first full year with the stove. We now use primarily pellets with wood as second backup and oil as last when we're out of town. Pellets went from $215/ton last year to $208 this year pre ordered at TSC. We have a Harman P43 and it has worked well. The only down side is it gets kinda fussy with even the smallest amount of soot build up in the exhaust. HTH Mike

I have noted the fluctuations in price of pellets, but I believe that it is a thing of the past. There is and will continue to be a lot of fuel available, it was just a matter of less than anticipated demand followed by high demand, but I believe that it will be more stable than firewood now.
