carb on 960

Can anyone explain what difference a tsx 765 carb will have on a ford 960. I believe it should have a tsx 706. I am having a terrible time adjusting -runs rich. When I rebuilt carb I asked for rebuild kit for a 960 tractor (at napa) so I'm thinking that all those little parts are a little wrong? Also timing light "dances" around. Worn distributor bushing? Easy to fix? Or buy whole new one? Only advances about 15-18 degrees when given full throttle. Sorry to ramble on but want to get things fixed. Thanks.

706 would have been original but if you're getting too
much fuel through this one it seems like it should work.
Is it rich at idle, at speed or both?
What happens when you turn the main jet all the way in?
It should shut the fuel off and kill the engine.
As long as it does you should be able to limit the fuel.

On the timing have you checked the mechanical advance
under the points plate? That's one possibility at least.

My 881 did the same thing w/the timing light until I replaced the points w/a set of Standard Blue Streak. The ones I took out had only 2-3 hours on them. Won't buy points from that source again!!

Advance works (somewhat). Will
advance timing about 18 degrees. At
full throttle. Not sure if that's
enough. Timing set at 400 rpm to 4
degrees btdc. Not as rich at idle.
But under a load (dragging logs) it
will belch black smoke if it gets in
a strain. I changed engine oil ran
it about 4 hours now the oil is
black? Why? Way rich? Ah and yes
turn needle all the way in kills
tractor
