A friend of mine is trying to buy his grandfathers 861 from the estate. It was appraised at $4500 or $4800 by the lady that did the appraisal on the estate. He has offered $1800 and this is why.
Older restoration with better than average paint that my friend did for his grandfather. All tires hold air, Fronts 50%, Rears 20% at best. Needs an exhaust manifold and exhaust will need replacing soon.
The biggest issue in the rear is cracked from the bottom drain plug out about 3 - 4" and leaks oil. Under load pulling a plow it causes it to leak more than just driving the tractor around. My question is; is it a fair offer or not enough? What do you think its worth?

With what you say is wrong with it $1800 is about twice what it is worth due to the fact as it sits it is a parts tractor. As it sits trying to use it is a safety risk and one could easily end up with the rear end folding up around the drive which would not be a good thing. Or in other words it is going to fall apart if used much if any.
The person who appraised it does not have a clue as to what it is worth as it sits it just look nice and that is what she is going by

Hard to put a value on sentimental tractor that belonged to grandfather. Has she gotten other
offers? You can find a rear end assembly in the classified ads on this site. And you might
find someone to haul it for you. Are you handy with repair work? Are you comfortable with
investing a couple more thousand with no hope of recovering it when you sell it again? (It's
a hobby, after all.) Will she pay to have repairs made?

Depending upon the day, a sound tractor would get about 3000.00
at a farm auction. At a different place and date, it could go for $2000. To be worth more, it would need new tires and a professional paint job.

Its a good tractor, and I might appraise it at about $3800 minus the rear end repair job. The dog might know if it can be welded. Would be almost same amount of work to replace it?

Needs rear end repaired or replaced and a thousand dollars worth of tires.
I understand to sentimental value in his offer being it's his grandfathers old tractor but even sentimental values have a limit.
Biggest problem I see is he knows what it needs and has his offer adjusted to those needs, The next guy may see a nice old tractor and offer more only to find the problems after he's bought it. There forth he would have paid to much but your friend wouldn't have his grandfathers tractor.
I think he needs to call the appraiser and tell her about the crack.
