Alternator Question

Been running a 12v alt. on my 640. It's a three wire set up, and I've been told it's to get the alt. to start charging at idle when the tractor is first started.
Noticed the last couple of times I've had to rev the motor up to start it charging, and then all is good.
Regulator going out?
Time for a $55 replacement or run to failure?

In keeping with checking the easy stuff, check the wire to the #1 spade on the alt.. that needs switched power thru a diode,
resistor or lamp.

If it is getting power at 1, and still won't charge till you rev it a bit, but then charges fine.. I'd just run it to failure.

start tractor.. let it warm up normally just running on battery, then rev it when you go to work...

Do you have the 5/8 inch pulley and belt or a 1/2 inch that
most alternators come with stock? I've tried running the 1/2
inch belts on them in the 5/8 crank/waterpump pulleys and
that's exactly what they did. Even with a 3 wire setup.
If you have the 1/2 inch I would change it because the water
pump may be slipping too and cause it to over heat. $0.02.

Got an 8n like that.

I use an indicator light to prevent feedback, I just rev it up till the light goes out, then it can be throttled back to idle
and will stay charging.

Just something I got used to.

Won't be able to check that until this weekend, but don't think that is the problem.
Been running this alt. for about 6 years without incident. As far as overheating......not hardly. Running a 190deg. thermostat, and even in the summer Texas heat pulling a 7' box blade or shredding, the temp never gets above 180. 3 different thermostats and shooting everything with a temp gun have verified the temp. Guess that's due to my 5 year old Chinese radiator.
I'll check the spade connectors and everything else this weekend and see what I can find.
Temps there should be in the 100's and I'll be popping Sotal plants out of the caliche using a modified sub soiler.

Just got a chance to look at the alt.
Belt is wide and tight, so that's not a factor.
Which post is #1, and should the voltage there be around 16v?
Electricity is not my friend, so all the detail you can give me will be a great help.

The blind hog found the acorn.
Dirty female spade connector on what I'm guessing is a ground wire.
Life is good again.

Glad to hear you found it. I've been out in the shop all day
so I haven't been checking in to see what's going on until now.
