My ford 640 hydraulic tank has sludge in the bottom of it I've tried carb clean but it didn't work so I was wondering if something like diesel would work

Welcome to the forum. Diesel worked for me.
Watch your other sumps for a rise in level.
Sometimes the seals between them leak.

Aaron, I usually clean housings with fuel. I am curious about how you went at it with the carb cleaner.

I don't see how that would not work if you used a few cans. Just keep spraying until the fluid comes out fairly clean.

Brake cleaner works a little better than carb cleaner and doesn't evaporate as fast.

When I rebuilt my JD Model A. It was full of sludge in the transmissuon and basically everywhere. The best thing I found was mineral spirit's sprayed with an old solvent gun that you hook to an air hose.
