5600 ford tractor

I have a ford 5600 that keep blowing a gasket. I need to know if there is a pressure release valve in the gear box and how to remove it ? And does the pitman arm have to come out?

I'll second the relief valve. Same thing happened with mine. I robbed the relief valve out
of the old pump, re cut the threads to match the new pump body, all good.

I'll have to look into this a little further. I have talked to one guy who is the one that told me there was a valve in gear box. He had same problem and took his somewhere to be fixed and he was told this was the problem with his. I have called place I bought new pump and they also say there is a valve in the gear box. Also say it's very unlikely it's in pump. I hope it's in pump and I won't have to go deeper into steering problem. If they are a valve in gear box I'll be sure to post so more will know.

I've worked on many, many of those steering boxes over the years, and I can 100% assure you, there is no relief valve in that box. There is the rotary valve that directs oil to either side of the piston during normal operation, and a simple check valve that allows oil flow to bypass around the piston during manual steering mode. However, there is NOTHING inside of that box that limits maximum pressure in the system. It's all in the pump.

Tell them they are wrong.

Here is a link to the parts diagram for the steering gear for your tractor. There is no relief valve mentioned:

Here is a link to the parts diagram for the power steering pump. Part labelled 15 (includes 16 through 22) is the relief valve.

hey I appreciate this info and I'll go with it. 100% sure is good enough for me. I'll put steering column back and contact the place where I bought pump. Thanks to everybody for help. We a small farm operation now so we have to fix a lot of things our self.

one question asked to me in search of answers to problem was could a line coming from pump be stopped up. there are 2lines coming from pump one should be a return line . if line is bad would it cause this problem .

If the check valve failed, you'd have weak steering because of the transfer of oil between the two sides of the piston. There's no way that a failed check valve could allow or cause excessively high pressure that would cause your gasket to blow. I'm still looking at your pump if I were you. More specifically, I'd be testing it with a pressure gauge to see how much pressure it is putting out. I'm looking at a series 10 manual right now that calls for 1050-1150 PSI relief setting. Maybe someone sold you a pump for a 7700 that has a 1600 PSI relief?

Still working on steering of 5600 tractor. Trying to put ball bearings in worm shaft. What is the best way of getting this done. According to diagram it takes 28 bearings.

I've never done it myself, but several folks on here have said that they use Vaseline or similar thick grease to hold the balls in place while they put things together.

Pack grooves with Vaseline. Roll balls in one at a time, then thread the shaft in just as you would a bolt into a nut.

Did you talk to the person who told you there was a relief valve inside the box?

Hey I got screw back in. Hadn't been able to get back with guy about relief valve. Not sure what type tractor he had then but that's what the man that fixed his told him.
