Ford 841 hydraulics

I recently purchased a 58 Ford 841 powermaster and am having issues with the hydraulics. Issue is/was hydraulics were not lifting all of the way. Would have control set to all of the way up and would still have 6"-10" of play. Could not run a plow as I do not have sufficient clearance.

Bled the hydraulic pump to remove any air, then messed with the control lever thinking that it might not be positioned properly. After doing these two things the arms do not lift at all. I checked the hyd fluid on dipstick showed overfull but when i looked into the fill port looked to be very low.

Any recommendations on what to do/check next?

The fact I lifted any told you it wasn't a prime issue.

The not lifting to height is likely a linkage adjustment and worn cam / pin issue.

When you pull the hyd cover to do the cam/pin / adjustment , do all the orings that come in the top cover kit.

Drain and flush oil.. After drain, I lil to dump in 2 g of diesel, a quart of dex merc 3+ ATF, and a pint of 90% rubbing alcohol. Do a victory lap then let that drain while you rebuild top cover

Soundguy,

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping I wouldn't have to pull the cover but probably not a bad idea as I do not know the abuse this tractor might have seen in the past. Do you know where I can purchase a new cam and pin. I looked under the 841 parts on yesterdays tractors and could not find them.

Thanks again for your expertise.

Have a sack full of them. PN 37407S. 5/16 X 7/8 dowel pin. Would drop one in the mail if I had your address. Email is open! Might need to build up the yoke cam if terribly worn.

On an almost 60 year old tractor it is most likely just normal wear rather than abuse.

The cam is something you will weld up and then grind and file down. its a cast part on the rockshaft with a small ledge ( cam ) that the pin rides. many times the pin is short and wears the cam and leaves a witness profile for you to weld back to and then grind down flat.

Maybe you should get my lift adjusting guide booklet with new cam follower pin and feeler gauge to do the proper linkage adjustments.

Do not remove the pump and submerge it in anything. It ain't dirty inside. Rather than doing that you might just paint the tires black. That used to
help my mother's car at the filling station where she traded back in the '40s.
