Ford 600 weak spark

My 600 starts great. Runs about 5-10 seconds then starts backfiring and missing. Opened the distributor and cleaned the points, checked gap, and such. When I break the points I get a weak spark sometimes. Good spark when I open the points and let the screwdriver jump the gap. Replace condensor, coil, points? I know they don't cost much but this is frustrating. This thing has been running great and then it's like someone flipped a switch.

I agree with Dean on this poor quality points will do that. Do not know where you got the points but sounds like so good old TSC parts

Points came from our local NAPA. One of the few places here where you can walk in and the old guys actually know something rather than having to look something up on the computer. It's a good place but that's not to say that I didn't get some cheap points this time. I'll try replacing them today. Thanks.

Sad thing is even the best brands of parts at time can be bad from the get go. I have had more then one new or rebuilt starter or alternator not be worth the time to install them

take some coarse paper, and if you have any polishing compound, apply a thin smear and use it to polish the points. let them be closed and use the spring pressure so they will polish as you move the paper in an orbital pattern.

remove paper, insert clean paper and pull thru a few times to remove the mocro polishing media.

see what you get.

points that make poor contact ...fromt he contacts, but good contacts when you bridge the arm tot he non moving base with a screw driver, I agree.. and bad contacsc points that are grey crumbly powdery metal when new..

fwiw.. all contact points corrode slightly and sometimes need cleaning, especially when the engine has not been started and run long enough to remove the corrosion. There are several ways to remove the corrosion:

1.. SnapOn sells 'point files' which are plastic strips with a very light abrasive coating on them. Have the points closed, open them with a small screwdriver, insert one of the point files, allow them to close on the point and drag it up and down a couple times. Open the points, remove it, and use some denatured alcohol or brake cleaner to remove the residue.

2.. Using an old paper match book cover with denatured alcohol on it, insert it like above and drag it a few times to remove an extremely light corrosion.

3.. Sometimes just opening and closing the points with the key on will burn off the corrosion

There are some other ways, just have forgotten them.
