Ford 4000 SOS oil drain leak

I just picked up a 62 4000 select o speed. I went and drained the oil out of the tranny and cleaned the drain screen. Now there is a constant dripping from the drain hole when I filled it back up. I looked at the drain screen when I had it out and I changed the o ring on the end of the drain plug. What really seems odd is that there was no o ring further in to keep any oil from leaking out the drain hole Its a very poor machine fit only. Does anyone else have problems with dripping at the drain screen? The only solution I see is to put a rubber expandable plug in the drain hole.

I've never heard of problems here. Are you sure you've got the correct O-ring? Are you sure you didn't cut it or rough it up going in?

You [b:29b2ecc432][u:29b2ecc432][color=red:29b2ecc432]CANNOT[/color:29b2ecc432][/u:29b2ecc432][/b:29b2ecc432] replace that screen with a rubber plug!!!! That is the only filter that keeps junk from entering your SOS system. The thing they call a filter only filters oil leaving the control valve.[/b]

I should have stated that a little more precisely. That "drain screen" as you call it, is actually the intake screen. It is through that screen that the transmission hydraulic pump draws all its intake oil.

Larry is correct. If you put a rubber plug in that hole, you aren't going anywhere - you could just as well use that transmission as a planter box then.

That screen only needs one o-ring on it to do its job. Make sure it's the correct o-ring and you should be good to go.

I'm not replacing the drain plug intake screen with a plug. The drain/intake screen you pull out just a little and turn it 180 to let the oil drain out of a drain hole at the bottom the transmission casing. There is oil dripping out of that hole even with the drain/intake screen pushed all the way in. The o ring is good. Just before the screen on the plug is where I'm talking about There should have been an o ring there but its only a machine fit. I'll try to find a picture of the drain/screen.

The number 38 o-ring, placed on the screen where I drew the red line, is all you should need. If there's a leak, you either have the wrong o-ring, or it's damaged, or there is some sort of flaw in the hole that it goes in. The one o-ring is all you need.

Let's suppose I was in your situation. Correct me if I err in these assumptions

1. The tractor was not leaking prior to the oil/o-ring change.

2. I found or purchased an o-ring that looked like it would fit.

3. I did not buy the 134373 o-ring from New Holland. nor did I try to match it for ID and thickness.

4. Now the tractor is leaking.

The first question I'm going to ask is what did I change? Obviosuly I've done something to alter the sealing characteristics of the drain/intake strainer because I didn't have this problem before.

My educated guess is that I didn't pay enough strict attention to matching the new O-ring to the original or that I cut or roughed it up somehow going together. I find it difficult to believe that I would have done damage to the bore in the transmission or to the screen assembly itself.

So now it's your turn! What did you do or fail to do that changed the characteristics of this intersection?
