871 SOS with 661 transmission swap becomes an 861?

All,

Hopefully you can provide some clarification. If an 871 Select-O-Speed is rebuilt with a 661 transmission, does it essentially become an 861? I ask because when it was restored about 20 years ago, it ended up with 801 decals. I'm the third generation owner of this machine and I just want to honor it with the correct decals! The transmission is stamped with 661 and 56255 and the engine has 310609 stamped on the lower right side if that helps.

Thanks for any info.

Myself I would call it an 861 and I suppose if I needed to put decals on it they ought to be 801 decals. If you are looking for 861 Decals I don't think that you will find them, any more than you will find 841, 871, 881, or 821.

Once the SOS is gone than whatever you replace it with will become the tractor model IMO. Since things have be switch around it's your call on the decals. If the sheet metal still retains the powermaster grill than I guess because of the 172 engine you could call it an 861. Or you could use the 801 decals. Here is a link for the 861 decals.
The 661 trans would be would be a 1958 model Correct decals would have had the model number. Somewhere around late 1960 they change them to read the series (801) number. So it's your call.
Did they just change out the trans or did they also change out the rear. The 871 rear will be indented into the casting at the top link where the 661 will be flush with the casting.

if he has a working pto, they had to at least change out some of the rear stuff.

might have been easier to swap the 871 e into the 661 chassie.

I know you loose the HD axles.. but no pto stuff.. also wonder about the gear ratio?

Interesting info about changing out (or keeping) the rear end. I was under the impression that it was all or nothing with the transmission. I'm a couple of hours away from the tractor, but I had someone else try to take a picture of it. It looks like the casting is indented at the top link. So that might mean that there is more of the original tractor still there than I thought? It obviously lost its "select-o-speed" transmission, but possibly other parts of the rear end are still original? The PTO does work. Another interesting thing is that it now has hydraulics, which I know it didn't have originally.

Thanks everyone!
