great discussion and oil pressure and flow but the noise turned out to be the crank shaft hitting the pick up tube also pulled the connection rod caps and micrometer them bearings all measured the same 0.060 closed up everything torqued still have high oil pressure average 80 psi used a plastic pipe for a stethoscope and I have a very noisy governer. I think I can live with it. Thanks guys for the thought and lively discussion but I think its time to put this tractor to work

Great. Nice looking early 4000. PS is nice. Makes her a winner for sure. I had 2, an SOS gas and 8 sp diesel. Restored the 8sp. Did you do yours or get it that way? Still have a 2000D of the vintage.

robably a decimal point problem, but with 0.060 rod & main clearances, it won't be a "working tractor" very long!

the paint was mostly this way I have been touching up and correcting the body work but a major paint job is in the future the bearing on the connecting rods is 0.060 thick all of them and no noise in the bottom except the governor

I don't think the bearing shell thickness means much unless you have a new one to compare it to. Usually, bearing condition (clearance) is assessed by using platigauge to measure bearing to journal clearance. I'm not saying you have a problem, I just don't think you have a definitive answer as to your bearing condition. Having said that, 80 PSI of oil pressure is a good sign. I would be interested in what your pressure is at hot idle. Anything over 10 would be good in my opinion.

It looks like I may have rattled a few feathers during the most recent discussion. I wasn't trying to tick anyone off, rather I was simply trying to warn about the potential dangers of running with low oil pressure. While a person may get away with oil pressure in the teens on a gas engine that is not worked at 100% load, I wouldn't take that risk on anything I own, and certainly not on a diesel.
