4600 Gas Head Swap

Hi again. I recently drug home a low hour 4600 with a bad engine. Seems a valve broke and beat up the head and piston pretty good. I think my engine guys could fix the head without too much trouble then I would bore and re-piston it. In my surplus parts I have a 68 2000 head and a 67-68 4000 head, both with the screw-in core plugs. And both are in excellent condition. Does anyone know if either of these will fit the newer 201 gas engine. Ford parts books list different valves for all three heads so I'm not sure they would perform well even if they bolt on. Any help might make my job easier.

All 3 cylinder gas heads will interchange. I
don't know what the difference in valves
would be. Maybe it had to do with the US
going to unleaded fuel about that time. If
you are concerned about it put new valves in
it. I wouldn't worry about it myself. Lots
of 65-75 tractors burning unleaded fuel with
no ill effects. One other thing you'll have
to do is drill and tap the front of the head
to accept the 4600 temp sender. The older
ones had 1/8" pipe thread for the temp
sender. The newer ones used 1/4" pipe
thread. But that's about a 5 minute job to
drill and tap.

Thanks for the info Ultradog MN and hears an update. I compared the 2000 head to the 4600 head and the intake ports in the 2000 head are way smaller so I think there would be a big breathing issue with that head. Since then I have taken the head to the rebuild shop and have since learned it is cracked so it's shot. I am going to pull the old 4000 head off and compare it to the 4600 and go from there on the gas option. I have 2 good rebuildable 4400 diesel engines sitting in storage. I am wondering if the 4600 block and crank from the gas engine are the same as the diesel. If they are I could take the head, rods and other diesel components and put them in the gas block and convert it to diesel. They are more in demand around here. The only thing I don't have is the air cleaner and front shroud which I can probably get at Anderson Tractor Parts or online. Does anyone out there have the air cleaner setup for a 4600 Diesel for sale?

Block, cam and crank are the same for 201 gas & Diesel engines. Rods may be. I put a 1983 201D from a 4610 in my 4000 gas chassis. Used
the gas air filter in the original location, just piped it together. Used the gas battery tray with a little modification and a Group 65 battery.
