1801 series

I found one for sale that the owner claims is an 1871. I have only seen pictures but it clearly doesn't have the sos trans and looks like a 5spd. Would the ag 5spd bolt in or could it be a different series?

My pal Kenny has an 1801 with a 5 speed - non live pto. It's hard to say if it is original or not. There are NO stampings/numbers in the usual place - above and behind the starter. Nada.

My H.D Industrial had the SOS Transmission, I could not use it because the PTO would not stop spinning. I replaced it with a five speed with Live PTO. I figured it would be easier to sell in the future with the five speed. Its a great tractor now which I use on the lawn every couple of weeks.

The series 1801 model 1871 was a single speed SOS. I read somewhere that the 5 speed was not used in the Industrial line as it was felt not to be durable enough. The 1801(red/gray) series were built between 1958 and 1960.Then they became the 4040 model (red/yellow) and were built between late 1960 and 1962. It then they became the 4000 series model 4140 or HD4000 (blue/yellow). Some of differences between 1801's and the 4040?s were dual hydraulic filters (4040), color, half steering wheel (some 1801's). Some differences between the 4040 and 4140 was color, power assist steering with signal Pittman arm (4140), loader frame brackets(4140), rear axles differences, increased loader capabilities(4040,4140). Model breakdown:
1. 1811(40404, 41404) SOS no PTO no 3 PT.
2. 1821(40401, 41401) 4 speed no PTO no 3 PT
3. 1841(40403, 41403) 4 speed with PTO and 3 PT
4. 1871 (40405, 41405) SOS with single speed
5. 1881 (40406, 41407) SOS dual speed (540, 1000, ground speed) PTO and 3 PT

I have found that the SOS PTO spins whenever the engine running so I always shut it down to take off or to put anything. I?m not sure what series the 4040?s belong to because the 4000 series did not start until 1963 and production of the 4040?s had stop in 1962. If anyone knows the answer to that I would like to know. Please take this with a grain of salt as I am far from infallible and I?m writing this without the guidance of my notes that I have gather over the years on these remarkable tractors. Thank you

I appreciate all the info. Don't remember ever hearing or reading much about the 4040 series.

I read a recent post that mentioned the 1801 series have issues with cable steering. What is the issue with them?

indFord - Read the tail end of the '01 series section on John Smith's "Identifying Old Ford Tractors" web page at the link below. He explains how they introduced the 2000 and 4000 industrial models two years before the ag models in the 4 cylinder 2000 and 4000 series:
