Okay,, I was able to re pinch the friction disk in the top cable wheel and got that part functioning again. The cover on the side with a notch for the shift arm was shatter so I pulled the cover off the other side, cut a notch in it and swaped it around. but...

Found the bottom control cable on partspring and got it ordered... To get to the bottom cable.. I need to pull the top cover, and I am NOT understanding or getting the instuctions for removing the pto cable...

It says pull pto knob to out position.. loosen conduit from cover... to turn the pto knob clockwise to disengage it from lower to upper.. What is the secret here? I dont want to force it and break something.... does it unscrew? is it threaded,, or a hook just like the shift cable that must be exposed first??

Do I need to remove the pto handle or something to get the slack... The ford service manual is only 3 sentence on the subject.

btw.. the upper cable and wheel was $655 and not in stock anywhere.. so the fix was a must.. Now to figure out how to replace the lower cable with the damaged head or hook....

This tractor was shifting fine last month... and some jerk kicked the shifter lever in my absence.

The lower cable is generally replaceable with out removing the transmission cover. It should just thread out. Are you sure yours won't?

It's been over 20 years since I've messed with the shift cables on an SOS, so forgive me in advance if my memory is fading...

Larry is correct, you should not need to remove the trans top cover to remove the lower shift cable. It should just thread right out. What can go wrong here is when you go to put the new one in. Do NOT shove it in hard, or you may dislodge the "nut" that the cable threads into (don't ask how I know this). Then you'll be pulling the top cover (not a big deal). Make SURE you do the measurement exactly as the book specifies when you go to thread it back in, or else you won't have either park or 10th.

As for the PTO cable, as far as I recall, you have to loosen the conduit behind the dash where it connects to the shift handle, before you can rotate that cable out of the shift cover.

Hope this helps.

Yes! Bern is correct. If you do actually need to pull the cover and remove the PTO control:

1. Loosen the upper conduit nut sufficiently to allow the handle assembly to rotate freely.

2. Completely remove the lower conduit nut from the transmission cover.

3. Unthread the jamb nut that secures the handle assembly to the dash. (It will still be hanging on the shaft.)

4. Push the assembly into the dash far enough to clear the housing.

5. Rotate the handle clockwise (IIRC) until it unthreads itself from the transmission PTO control linkage.

6. Now remove the little pin that secures the T handle to the assembly so that it can be removed from the dash and placed out of the way.

7. When you replace the cover, you'll need to thread the lower transmission shift cable into the PTO control in the transmission to guide it into the transmission cover as it goes on. I believe it's this PTO control that Bern is thinking of pushing too hard on and having to remove the cover again to recapture it. Don't ask me how I know either.

8. Once the cover is in place and secure, remove the shift stub from the PTO control and thread it into the transmission shift control trunnion wheel to the proper length, which off the top of my head is 2-3/4" from the top of the threaded fitting on the cover to the bottom of the notch. You may need to tweak this once you check your shifter for full range operation.

9. Now! With the PTO control in the dash, retaining nut and T handle in place, CAREFULLY thread the lower end of the cable back into the PTO control in the transmission by letting it contact the control and rotating the T handle counterclockwise (IIRC).

10. There may be a handle shaft length spec in the book. However, I like to adjust that cable thusly: Making sure to retain the handle in the fully engaged position, thread the cable into the transmission PTO control arm until the conduit fits snugly against the cover fitting and you cannot pull it away from that fitting with a fair amount of pressure.

11. Tighten all the hardware.

How's that for three sentences? God bless your efforts!

BTW, I think I've seen those shifter covers on eBay. I know they're available somewhere as new parts.

Larry and Bern have well covered the R & R procedures.

Reproduction shifter covers and handles are available from Steiners (and others) for the pre 65 shifters. I do not know if these will fit the post 64 models.

Thanks everyone for sharing there experience and knowledge. I will see how it goes... waiting for the lower control cable to come in...

okay,, got it apart... and now... a picture is worth a million words..

the pto cable needed about 20 turns to unscrew, not a half turn like the shift cable. Thats were I was hung up... and the lower shift cable can then be un-screwed out of the control spool, now that I can get to it... as it was down in the lower housing.

Hopefully on the down hill side... if the bottom cable comes in,, and I can re-time the pto and shifter, should be able to save this nice tractor. As long as the crimping of the friction disk in the top cable wheel holds up... and its not that hard to shift... life will be good. Will report back later... Again, thanks everyone for helping get this far.
