1964 Ford 4000 rear end questions?

I have to replace the PTO seal in the rear end of my tractor. There is a cover on the right side of tractor where the SOS disconnect is that where I check the PTO oil level? Is the filler hole the large plug just behind the seat on the right? What oil do I use D134?

My 62 881 has a check plug on the left rear side of the center housing, dip stick by the disconnect is for the hydraulic system.
One of my neighbors was a Ford tractor mechanic for years, he's always said to use 134 in the sos and hyd but to run 80-90 in the rear diff.
I've heard some say they use 134 in everything.

Thanks I have a high crop 4000 with SOS and don't see a plug in that area is it on the axle housing where that big ring of bolts are?

Your PTO is part of your SOS. You check the SOS oil to check the PTO. That's a pipe plug below the front of the footboard on the right side.

Now! If you're asking about the oil level that surrounds the shaft in the rear housing, that level is checked at a pipe plug on the left trumpet housing behind the axle.

PS: If you've got a '64 4000, the round cover with the traction disconnect is on the left side of the center housing. Are you sure you have a '64. Instructions might be a bit different if it's a '65 or later. How many cylinders does the engine have? 4 or 3?

I could be wrong on the model year where is the serial number? The serial number I think is bellow the air cleaner and has a 172 cid 4 cylinder gas engine in it. If the plug is in the back by the PTO it's probably covered in oil I'm looking for a pipe plug right and I should be able to see it with out crawling under it? I think I'm going to take some photos and try to idea all the fill and drain plugs on this thing.

Thanks guy's!

This is very close to what I'm working on but not my tractor.

The differential check plug is on the left trumpet housing, aka left axle housing, not too far off level with the center of the axle and behind the axle. If the unit isn't deluged with oily dirt, one should be able to see it with ease.

4 cylinder 4000s were theoretically built as '63 or '64 models. I do have one, however, that was built in late '62 and another in mid '65

I was checking the oil in my 881 today a realized the plug is on the axle housing, not the center housing. Sorry I must have been thinking about the check plug on my 5000. Standing at the back look on the left axle housing at about the same height as the pto and you should see a square headed plug, to add oil there's a larger plug behind the seat on the right side of the large draft control spring.

Thanks guy's I did find it I'm assuming the plug in the bottom of the axle housing is the drain plug. I will pickup some 80W gear oil and replace the PTO seal.
