640 engine turns over by hand while in gear

I replaced the flywheel ring gear. When I slid the engine and transmission back together, I am still able to turn the crank with a wrench with the shifter in gear. I have not refilled the hydraulic oil yet and Im wondering if that has something to do with it.

Looking for ideas. I don't know a great deal about tractors

If in gear you may be able to turn it over by hand with a wrench and it should move...if it don't move, something didn't get hooked up right.

Depends on how far you turned the crank. Not all that long ago I was replacing the hyd pump drive on my 841 and figured I would put it in gear so I could loosen the bolts in the drive hub but doing so did not hold it in place and I must have gotten at least one full turn of the crank and could have kept turning it more so I just stopped at that point and did it another way

thank you for the replies. I can't think of any reason why it still turns either except that I put something together wrong. Just trying to make sure before I pull it back apart.

If it has a ORC remember it will slip in one direction but not the other direction.. You do not have the mechanical advantage at the PTO like you have at the crank with a leaver like a wrench...

I understand were you are at it takes a good feel to tell if the clutch releases at the crank with a leaver line a wrench are a pull bar...

Move to the rear of the tractor I think you will find what you are looking for. The output side is always the best side to check :!: Car truck tractor are what ever...

ok i engaged the pto and could not turn it one way by hand. is the pto not tied in with the tractor wheel gears? is it a direct connection to the transmission and engine?

If the PTO is engaged, transmission in neutral, and clutch "out", it is a direct connection to the engine.

ok it seems I was paranoid. The engine will turn over a bit before it engages the transmission. I kept turning engine and it finally engaged the wheels. Tractor is back together now and running fine. Thanks for the comments and ideas.
