Ford 901 follow up

Went to have a look today. Very nice owner that didn't know too much about it but seemed to care for it well enough. Engine turned over fine with a battery jumped
straight to the starter. Power steering was all there but the belt for the pump wasn't hooked up. I would have bought it then and there, but the select o speed was
locked up and don't know enough about them to know how to disengage it. I tried moving that lever above the foot board by the inching pedal to the "off" positions but
that didn't help. Owner said $700 firm. All the oils where clean, and the old radiator is there and looks patchable. Thoughts now?

Here's another pic of the lever I tried switching. Also, all the sheet metal was there and pretty straight too.

The disconnect is on the round plate with the dipstick for the hydraulics. If there is a lever by the inching pedal it may be the deluxe sos with the two speed and ground speed PTO. My 2 cents worth GregNE

Yup! Greg is correct. The lever you were moving has nothing to do with tractor propulsion. And since you didn't have the engine running, the transmission is doing just what it's supposed to do!

If you look at your photo it's the flat piece of steel(lever) next to the dip stick where you check the Hyd oil. Take the nut off, reverse the lever so it's easier to grip. If it won't move you might have to rock the tire while trying to move the lever to get it to disengage. You also might want to chock the tire if you are on any kind of hill. Once disengaged it will roll freely.

S-O-S always locks itself in Park when the engine's not running. The others have already told you where and how to disengage the trans output from the differential so you can roll it. Good luck with it if you end up getting it. I'm surprised the seller didn't know about the traction disconnect.

FWIW, that is the second generation SOS, which is much less problematic that the original.

Thanks Kirk. Looks like I'm about to be asking my friends if a I can borrow a trailer and heading back over there asap.

What makes you think it's 2nd gen? The cover may look like it, but neither the inching pedal nor the casting number do!
