Blue Paint Questions

Getting ready to paint my 3 cylinder 4000SU. Pretty much got it all apart now and getting ready to rebuild the engine.
What 'Blue' should I use? Brand and Color? Don't want no clear coat or anything like that.
Just a good durable paint. Would you paint the engine with the same paint or should it be some other high temperature paint.
Going to shoot it with and air gun, but what about mostly unseen parts like under the sheet metal? Can I use a spray can? Thinking I'll paint the parts while off
Then once mostly together spray the whole thing.
One other thing. I picked up a engine spray paint can at O'Riley's. Seem there are two shads for Ford blue now. An old one and the new color. Guy said the New was for '90 and above.
Thought it looked more the color but bought the Old instead. Not a match.

How much time have you got into the prep? Don't use expensive paint on a five hour prep or cheap paint on a fifty hour prep.

Prep will be 'Total'. Not finished as of yet. I drive a truck. All small parts will go out with me. Tons of time can be spent on each of them.
The rest I'll spend what ever time it takes. My painting might not turn out the prettiest. But it won't peel.

From that description it sounds like you need good paint, as in lower end automotive and the primer that goes with it. You need to step up from the alkyd enamel at the tractor dealer.

We have only an O'Riley's in town for a paint dealer. I know on their clear coat, they have a camera like deal to match unknown colors. Guess that would probably work on other types paint too.
Doesn't need to be a perfect match. Would like it close. Main thing is durably.

A good acrylic enamel will last a long time and is better than original, check your local New Holland dealer and they can tell you the right color.Your old color is probably faded so you can't count on matching it.

We always use the New Holland paint and it works great. The can of blue I have here says Acrylic Blue (63/00) Part number on the gallon can is 9613387DS. Our dealer also sells a hardener that works with the NH paint and we use it in the paint on all the sheet metal Makes it come out slick. It is Valspar Renew part number REN3001. I tried a different hardener a few years ago and it didnt work nearly as well as the Renew. I don't use the NH thinner anymore. Instead we use Nason Ful-Base Reducer. There are three different temp ranges so you can match it to the weather your gonna paint in. The part numbers are 441-20 for the fast 50-65 degree, 441-21 for the medium 65-85 degree and 441-22 for the slow 85 and up degrees. We usually always use the medium unless we are painting something in the winter.

This is the best combo we have found. The color is the best match to me and with the hardener and Nason Thinner it should come out smooth and shinny. I haven't really seen any mixed paints that match the original like they should. I also use a Nason primer on the sheet metal that seems to work very well. I can get you those numbers if you would like. All the Nason stuff you should be able to get at O'reillys.

I have painted at least a dozen tractors in the last few years and have had Very good luck with Valspar Tractor and Implement Enamel.
Even my 3000 which sat outside for about 8 years still looks good and has no rust or peeling.
Use the hardener with it. Likewise my disc and a cultivator which have sat outside for 5 and 12 years respectively still look good.
Best place to get it is on Amazon.
I just use lacquer thinner from Menards or Home Despot to reduce it. Cheap and I use it for everything else - cleaning fine parts, etc.

I have the same question too about paint. Is the color you're using a lighter blue like the original ford color? I don't want a straight blue.

I just finished pricing gallon sizes of paint. The Nason is the least expensive acrylic I found and it was $100 plus. Urethane was out of sight for me. I did find acrylic Urethane for $100 plus at a certain Sum*** Racing site. The only problem is that their paints come in fixed colors.
How much is the New Holland paint per gallon?

Messicks online shows the New Holland Paint at 61.95 a gallon. The hardener is 48.25 per pint which is
high but you mix it 8 parts paint to 1 part hardener. I only use the hardener on the sheet metal.

I painted fenders on my 1961 Dexta Empire Blue using OSHA safety blue. It was nearly a perfect match to my eyes, but it
came off after a couple years. Probably not your exact blue though. A lighter shade during the Fordson years.
