I have a 660 that i bought as a basket case several years back and well I finally got to getting it together and running this week.... So that part is exciting.... The bummer is that it appears that the rear main seal is leaking like nobody's business!!
I dropped the pan and pulled the rear main cap take a look at what I am seeing as well...

It looks like the whoever rebuild the motor with the rope seal has it a good 3/16 below the level of the top main cap?? It was filled with black rtv when I pulled the rear main.

Also the little side seals or green v-groove things just fell out of the cap which I thought was a little odd... And can anyone confirm that the neoprene seal is installed correctly?

What is the consensuses?

Lip seal looks to be installed correctly. When you use the lip seal there is no place to install a rope seal. I am gonna take it looking at the block pix something is in the second grove from the rear its suppose to be empty.

Get a new seal kit either one that replaces the side seals with a speical RTV ( victor reinz) are get one that uses the paper side seals like you have and RTV them in do not soak them in oil !.
Its to big of a gamble to depend on oil to swell them so they will seal seal. If oil swells them to seal why did yours just fall out.

I do not like the seal kit that use the rubber side seals that use a pin. I used them on my last build it was a PITA to get them to seal.
It may have just been me

I have done more than my share and know Bern has so also use Bern's recommendations.
