901 hydraulic pump replacement

So as I continue my quest to install a front end loader on my 981 I've started considering the hydraulic pump.

The factory one is supposed to be 4.1gpm which everything says will be extremely slow on a FEL. So what can I replace it with and keep my pto.

I have researched other gear pumps and they look like I can get them to work but has anyone done this to replace the factory one?

I'm considering tractor replacement but I've got this great tractor that is simple and I know.

Replacing the tractor hydraulic pump with another of larger capacity is not practical. Moreover, adapting a front mounted, crankshaft driven pump to a 9** series tractor is also not practical due to the front bolster.

Your options are using the OEM pump or a PTO driven pump.

I have a Ford 70I trip bucket FEL on my 961, operated from the OEM hydraulic pump. Though not fast, it is adequate. Of course, this is a trip bucket having only lift cylinders.

Dean, you seem to have quite the knowledge and experience with these tractors so thank you for your input.

Why is replacing the pump not practical? I've looked at some 4bolt pumps with gpm in 11-13gpm range which look like they would bolt right up once the gear adapter housing and gear were connected. Then some rerouting of the input/output lines. Is this something you have tried or just know. I'm interested either way.

I have a lead on a trip fel and/or a one arm fel but have not pulled the trigger. The trip bucket to do minor dirtwork scares me and the one arm loader to unload hay bales scared me.

With enough money and/or time many, many things can be done but some things do not make economic sense. This is one such project.

Yes, it certainly could be done but you will end up spending a great deal of time and/or money doing so.

If mine, I would make do with the OEM pump or upgrade to an easily removable PTO driven pump.

That build by TOH is exactly what I was thinking except using a gear pump that is four bolt and has a larger gpm.the one he used is rather small just to get the 3pt working. I'm going to reach out to him on time vs value.

Dean, I'm inclined to believe you on this one particularly because I've got a 981 with power steering just getting a sufficient gpm is only one step. What is the up down speed on your 901 factory pump? I can live with slowere than new if I can do dump/tilt and up/down.

The auxillary valve adapter plate can be modified so that you can run the hydraulics through a spool valve or valves to operate any remote cylinder?s

I have it on my 660 and it works good. Just can't use the three point to raise while using the spool valve which is not a big problem.
