6700 PTO Problem

Splines stripped on the PTO drive shaft that connects at the clutch. Tractor was double split. Shaft and hub in the clutch replaced. Test the tractor with a bush hog. After the tractor warms up the PTO
stops. When you first engage the PTO you can tell that it does not seem to engage fully. Checked the cable that engages the PTO....it seems to work correctly. Any thoughts?

Assuming the PTO worked correctly before the splines stripped, then it's pretty safe to assume that something went wrong on re-assembly. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen people damage the PTO clutch forcing the transmission back onto the rear axle.

I'd pull the round cover off the LH side and peek inside with a mirror to see what the clutch pack to support alignment looks like.

Thanks Bern. I wasn't present when they put the tractor back together....but that's a real possibility. When we remove that cover...any special precautions? Do we need to drain oil first?

Nothing behind that cover that will fall out except oil, so yes, drain it first.

Look inside, using a mirror on a handle if you need to. Make sure parts #1A & 15 are fully seated and square with each other. If they are not square to each other, something is wrong. The forward edge of #15 should be almost touching the back face of the #1A clutch drum. If you can see any of the #16 seal rings, that's really bad. Also, grab shaft #56 with your hand and see if it has any end play. If it does not, that is also bad.

Great info. Probably rolled the tractor back apart pulling the clutch housing partway out of the support then broke the rear seal ring when it was forced together.

Yep, it's called been there, done that, learned the hard way. Those 4 cylinder tractors, especially with a flat deck or a cab, can be a BEE-OOCH to get back together. In my younger days, I forced one because I got so frustrated. Needless to say, it did not end well. That was one tough lesson to learn.

Yeep... Pull the whole clutch ahead out of the support, brake band off the drum, etc. If the plates don't align with the input properly o reassembly... gonna be a mess.
