Ford 3930 starter

The original subject was "Ford 3930 starter".

This is the worst 'IDEA" Ford ever had. I've spent 3 hrs on Fathers Day removing something that should have take 20 minutes!~

You posted the other day about needing to replace your starter and did you need to remove the filters.
Rod gave you a good reply and asked how you determined the solenoid was bad.
No answer from you...
And no way for us to read the ancient thread you just replied to.
So we don't know what the problem was, if you fixed it or why something took 3 hours.
These boards work best if people will give us a follow up - in a new thread.

I had never work on a diesel until I bought mine . We unloaded it in the driveway at the house and not the shop 1/2 mile away . With a basic set of tools I removed the starter in about 20 minutes . This really was about an average rating on skill level . I really don't see anything on my 3000 that is out of normal as far as to be called a poor design . If you wanted to complain about rebuilding an SOS transmission I would be sympathetic , mine is a 8 speed .

I've pulled the starter on my 4610 su with no problems. Didn't have to remove any fuel filters . Just need a long 3/8 extension to get the bolt next to block. It does have to make a sharp turn to miss the injector pump though.

When you use the tools I listed, it does take 20 minutes.... If you don't.... you'll be there for days.

Rod

Agree with Rod, it does only take 20 minutes, if it has a loader in the way. If no loader, maybe 10 minutes at the max, or 5 if I'm really huffing it.

I do have a bit of sympathy for him in this case because a 3930 is not a 3000 or a 4610........
You do have to pull the filter head and probably the tool box if it's got one in there. But it's still only a 20 minute job or a little better depending on how many times you drop the back bolt reinstalling it...
10's only had the single filter head and no glass separator so the starter will drop out easier.

Rod

Rod, I beg to differ. My '89 4610 su has both filter and separater
