8n valve keeper

I was changing oil in my 1947 or 48 8 N and found a tapered valve keeper in the drained oil. Is it possible for one of the keepers to come out and the other half to stay in? The tractor appears to run ok, no missing or valve noise. Will the other half eventually come out and what will happen then, other Han th valve won't work. The keeper than I found does not appear to be damaged.

There has been a few reports lately of those keepers coming out. It is EZ to drop one and it fall in the pan while serving the valves in chassis. I have never see a keeper come out only what I have read the only damage reported has been to the valve and retainer. Some have put new keepers in only to have them come out a few hours later. I guess its from ware on the valve stem its self the stem is unable to keep the keeper captured.

If it worry's you remove the manifold and tappet covers and inspect. If you don't and experience a misfire are pop'N thru the carb you will know were to go hunting. The valve is offset a good ways from the piston and can not possibly make contact with the piston so in this case I don't see how any major damage can be done if the keepers come out.

Another possibility is a keeper that was lost into the pan during earlier engine work and simply left inside.

If mine, I would remove the tappet covers and inspect.
