1970 FORD 4400 Questions

So I bought this tractor. It runs but it is leaking power steering fluid like crazy....1qt/per hour! What would most likely be the source (I havent crawled inside to investigate yet, wanna have an idea what Im looking for first). How easy will this repair likely be and how time consuming? Best place to find parts?....here are some pics.....

If I was a betting man...who am I kidding, I'll bet on anything. I bet its the cylinder under the radiator and in particular the
control valve on top of the cylinder. A metric O ring if I remember.
 
If no visible leaks or drips, my first bet would be the pump seal is letting the fluid into the crankcase. Check the engine oil level, if it is way over full, do not run the engine until you have changed the oil and fixed the leak in the pump.
 
I agree. Losing a quart an hour would be quite a
mess, if it were an external leak. Those seals on the
front of the pump get old and hard and then leak.
 
Also take a look at your left front axle kingpin. Looks tilted in too far on top. Lift axle off the ground with loader, grab wheel at top and bottom and try to shake. If sloppy, kingpins tend to bind when turning with a load in the bucket and give the power steering a work out. See if any looseness is between knuckle and kingpin, (easy bushing fix) or between the kingpin and the axle eye (more difficult blacksmith fix).

Nice looking tractor, I like the large rear wheel weights.
 
i will check them when I get home today....But as I recall the rear wheel is in a hole and that wheel is on a hill, could be causing it to appear tilted.

It is an external leak and a huge pain in the butt. It even leaks when the tractor is not running. I have to fill it up to move it around my place. (The tow truck driver that brought it to my house was sooooo mad!)

If you could snap a picture of where the leak is that would help. I didn't see any fluid in any of the pictures that you've posted so far.

It leaks so much and there is so much crap blocking my view it is hard to tell where exactly it is coming from. I will clean some of it off and give it a shot

I found the complete repair book on this site....$200.....don't know if ill be buying (probably will, but I need to throw a fit about the price first). Looks the same as the steering on my 5000. I suspect you have a hose leaking. Fill the pump then start the engine and turn the wheels while watching for leaks. It wont hurt to run the engine without the radiator for a few moments but you may what to remove the fan for safety reasons.

In your third picture, the piece going left to right across the middle of the picture is the power steering cylinder. It is what transfers the pressure from the pump into power for the movement of the steering. The two hydraulic lines connect to the cylinder on the right side of the picture at the control valve that is part of the body of the cylinder. The control valve has a flat bar going out of it that goes toward the left called the actuating link, and the other end of that link is connected to some linkage that's connected to the front axle support. It's designed so that the body of the cylinder moves slightly when you turn the steering wheel and that slight movement causes the actuating link to push or pull on the control valve which changes the flow of the fluid in the cylinder to make the cylinder extend or retract and provide power assist to your movements of the steering wheel. There are some adjustments that can be made to fine tune the linkages so that it works properly, but if it is working for you while it has fluid in it then you probably don't need to worry about that until you get the leak taken care of. The service manual should have the procedures for making those adjustments if you want to make them after the leak is fixed, which I would want to do if I had the front end taken apart that far already.
