1964 Ford 41205 with Select O Speed transmission.

This is my first time on a forum such as this so please bear with me.
I am a member of the Porter County (Indiana) Chapter of Izaak Walton League of America.
We were just donated the above tractor incl front end loader & bushog on June 10,16 and drove it about 18 miles to our property.
Ran fine considering the previous owners were using Unleaded 87 octane.
Added 89 octane with lead substitute and proceded to use bushog knocking down about 5 acres of native prairie. Dull bushog.
stopped for lunch & tractor died and has not started since. Checked out starting circuit wiring, but there is a single wire from the start button which goes to the Select O speed Trans. Assuming this goes to ground? Starter solonoid is not getting power thru Key or starter Button. Do you have a diagram of this wiring? Don. Frame
 
Well first off the cheapest gas made now days is just fine in that tractor and the snake oil lead stuff is just a waste of $$ big time.
As for it not starting are you saying it will not turn the engine over or the engine spins but does not start. I think your saying it does not turn over at all so with it in park jump across the big terminals of the solenoid and see if it will spin over. If it does then the wiring from the starter button to the solenoid has problem or the starter button is bad.
 
Thanks, Checked the key switch and push button, Push button has a wire leading to the Select O Speed transmission. I suspect there is a safety switch to prevent starting out of park. Because it is only one wire, it must connect to ground internal to the Trans. Also the other lead from the push button Starter switch is broken off. Since the tractor was rewired to 12 volts, there are many wires that havce been cut off and left dangling. I have not been able to get a wiring diagram that shows the ignition wiring. I have started to ring out these loose ends, but a diagram would help a lot. Thanks
 
I do not have a diagram but if it uses a simple Delco 10SI alternator there are 3 wires for it and one small wire off the solenoid that if grounded should make the starter spin over

I take it this is a gasoline engine tractor? Since it sounds as though it has been "customized" fairly thoroughly, I'm not sure a factory wiring diagram would help greatly. However, in a nutshell here it is, as the tractor was originally built.

1. You are correct in that your tractor was originally designed so that the starter would not engage unless the transmission was in Park. There is a safety start switch in the transmission which is what your wire is for.

2. The other wire off the starter button would have gone to the small S terminal on the starter solenoid.

3. A wire from the switched side of the terminal block would have gone to the small I terminal on the starter solenoid.

4. The key switch would have had one wire attached to each lug of the terminal block.

5. A wire from the switched side of the terminal block would have gone to the ignition coil.

There are other wires on the terminal block, but this should get at your problem.

Since it sounds as though you're saying the starter will not engage, you may also wish to check your battery, its cables and connections, and any other wiring and connections in the starting circuit.[/list]
