fuel injector pump?

I just got a 1979 ford 2600 diesel and was checking out the fluid levels. I have a owners manual on order but hasn't arrived yet. Right in front of the injector pump is a screw plug. So I open the plug and I can see a gear. What is this and what's supposed to be in there? Or what is it used for?

That's where you put the motor oil in. The gear you see is the injection pump drive gear.
Older thousand series had the oil fill in the valve cover requiring you to open the hood and swing out the battery to gain access to the oil fill.
On the -600 series they moved the oil fill down on the side of the timing cover for easy access.

Is there a dip stick for me to check the oil level? Or should I be able to see it in the plug area?

You need to take a few minutes to walk around and look your tractor over before asking questions like that.
Yes there is a dip stick to check the engines oil level, it's located down near the oil pan rail on the block. On my -000 series it's on the left side just to the rear of the ps pump ahead of the oil filter, on later model tractors they move the dip stick to the right side of the engine between the inj pump and starter.

Welcome to the forums jettex. As you come back with more questions, avoid the use of the word "area" because it hinders the process of getting to the exact location and thus part and problem.
