Looking at a non-running 1962-65 Ford 4000

I've seen a great looking 1962-65 Ford 4000 Diesel w/SOS for sale in my area for $1200. It is said to have been running fine til 2 months ago when the crankshaft broke.

I was considering buying it and put the wheels on a 641 I'm working on (One rear rim rusted beyond help, 2nd heading that way, and the front rims are pretty bad.). Then later maybe crack open the 4000 and see how bad things are (and then have to hunt for more wheels???? What a trap!)

Should I just run away from this? Thanks all!!!

I would say that it comes down to how much you trust the guy that says that it was running fine.

I don't know your location but in my area I would pass.
A non-runner that may have major engine damage.
No way to test the SOS/hydraulics/PTO/etc?
Unless you know the tractor personally that's a big gamble.

Brand new rims and tires are about that price from Tucker Tire.
Already mounted and delivered to your door.
Assuming you don't have/need power adjust rims.

New tires and [b:70998d6694]cheap[/b:70998d6694] rims are even less locally for me.
Nod to Ultradog, the inexpensive rims are cheap rims.
No where near as heavy as the originals.

Of course, if you're looking for a project, the prior 4000s are
great machines. Here's my 4000 rowcrop SOS. I had to put
different front tires on it but it otherwise came pretty much as
pictured with dual remote hydraulics in good running/working
condition, good/matching rear tires and PA rims for $1500.

Granted, diesel and utility models generally sell for a higher
price than the narrow front rowcrops. Personal preferences.

Lets ee.. guaranteed bad engine.

unknown trans, pto, 3pt, hyds, steering, etc.

useable tires... unknown :to us, tin.

I'd go 500$ 600$ if I liked the guy.

Thank you all! Your advice has been a cold compress to my tractor fever! I'll work on acquiring tires/rims a different way for my 641 and as a bonus not acquire yet another project to work on.

Is the Tucker Tires referred to the same that I see which lists items on Ebay (based in TN)?

yes.. tucker does have an ebay store.

hint.. call them.. they are great people.. some times they have cosmetic blemish tires that they sell for quite cheap.

my last purchase was 2 13.6-28 (new) blem tires mounted on new 6 loop rims with tubes, delivered to my farm in florida ( rolled out the back of the delivery truck by the side of the road near my fence / gate ) for something like 700$ can't beat that with a stick.

the tires had names buffed off with a grinder wheel, and one had a hole in the thread plugged with some sort of rubber plug from the inside ( I think it was a vandalised new tire that someone drilled ).. they hot patched or plugged it and put a farm patch on the inside.

it's been on one of my rowcrops for a few years now. I just bolted them on and went.
