Ford hydraulic problem

My neighbor has a 1953 Ford, NAA I guess. He has a brush mower on the 3 point and it will not stay up with the engine shut off. With the engine running it will stay up. He said it would stay up in the past ( Years ago). I would say that it is the control valve or the lift piston is leaking by.
Anybody had this problem or know what it could be?
Thanks Dennis

hose are among the major possibilities. Why worry about it staying up if not using it?

considering you shouldn't leave a laod lifted on the 3pt when not in use.. if the load stays up for a few minutes so you can clutch, etc.. it's usually not a big deal... now if it drops the moment you clutch.. then yeah.. big deal.

worn lift piston oring is usually the prime cause, followed by a good list of other causes.

It's much safer to leave the lift arms down when the tractor's not running. Anything could cause them to drop unexpectedly, like curious kids, a stray cat, an unexpected failure of a seal, etc. And if someone happens to be near the back of the tractor when something like that happens they could be injured or killed.

Also, leaving the arms up, especially with a heavy implement on them, for long periods when the tractor's not running puts unnecessary stress on those very same seals that are probably leaking now. Granted all seals will fail eventually due to the stress of pressure while doing work, but why subject them to extra pressure that they do not need to be subjected to by leaving the arms up when it's not running?

That is a very common thing with any of these old tractors. Shoot my 801/841S has done that for well over a decade and I use it all the time. Now if it falls so fast that it can not be used then yes you have a problem.
