need help with 3000 steering

I got involved in helping a friend get his 3000 back together after the original person helping is now unavailable to put it back together. They had split it for a clutch job and I was to slide the halves together and get it running, I'm not new to this type work so I took it on. I had no problem doing this but now when I started it the power steering fluid is pouring out of the steering column and I agreed to help fix that hoping all it needed was o rings and seals. I unbolted the steering mechanism and began to separate it from the adapter and noticed these parts laying on top the transmission. I'm not sure where the thin piece of steel came from, it could have possibly been there the whole time and I didn't notice it. I can't find it in the parts diagram and don't think it came from there, does it look familiar to anyone here? I believe they broke it on the original split they used an overhead electric crane he had the chain cradling the transmission and up through the steering wheel I didn't like the looks of the way they did it I can only assume they got rough with it.

I think that part is called the steering adapter.
They are available from this site. Click the link below.
I don't know if it comes with the seal already installed.
You will want to replace the upper seal above the hydraulic block while you are in there. Also both orings.
Go through the hyd block. Remove all the plungers, etc. Clean it in lacquer thinner. Inspect for rust and crud then reassemble everything with light grease.
It is not hard. If you have trouble getting the plungers back in the right holes holler.
We can help.
