Looking For Opinions of Value

Hello everyone.

I'm looking at a 1958 Ford 841. It has the dealer installed 4WD and a Wagner loader. I don't know if it has the add in for an extra range of gears. It is not currently running but probably just needs the usual carb cleaning, tune up, etc... The tires have been sitting without air for a while and whether they need replacing remains to be seen. The tractor has been sitting but tarped, it still has a lot of paint on it. It comes with extra rear wheels and wheel weights.

Any thoughts on how much it's worth? It's in the mid Hidson area of New York.

Thanks!

Insufficient information.

INMO, any non running tractor is a parts tractor.

The FWA (Elenco?) certainly ads value but how do you know that it is functional?

The wheel weights, if Ford, so-called Pie weights (and complete) should be worth $650+.

Tires/rims? Insufficient information.

Sherman combination transmission? Likely, but need to know.

From available information, maybe $2.000. $2,500 if Sherman equipped and complete heavy set of pie weights.

Absent reliable additional information, I would attempt to buy this one as is. It is likely worth significantly more running, especially if the FWA is functional.

Well here are a couple of pics, not very good. I'll try to get better pics and more information. I do know the owner to an extent so I feel that what he tells me about what is and isn't wrong with it is trustworthy. He says the 4WD has no issues, but obviously I need more in depth info. The figures thrown out so far are helpful in helping me decide whether to proceed, thanks. :)

Your photos do confirm what appears to be a Sherman combination transmission and at least the discs and adapters for Ford pie weights.

Value is going up a bit.

Does the FEL include a bucket?

I think so.

I would be within the range that Dean has suggested. The tractor is probably worth more for collector value than I would be willing to pay. It is
also likely to be worth more for its component parts than together. To buy it for every day use I'd probably look elsewhere.

I'd probably buy it in the 2-3 thousand range.
The base tractor with a Sherman is a good machine, and I like to fix stuff, and the 'cool' factor on that is very high.

But, like said, I have other tractors to use, more of a project thing.
I also agree, that as soon as the collectors hear about it, I'm out of the running price wise.

Those tires are holding air. They are a bot low, but the rims are being held up and are not sitting on the bottom tread. The tread looks usable. You shuould still be able to get a few years out of them.

I love a good project. If you're able to do the work yourself I'd say go for it. Remember that loader doesn't appear to have downforce.

Your big advantadge is that you know the owner. I'd stay in the $2k range. If I didn't know the guy I'd fight my way down to $1500 for a non runner.

Around here (NE Oh) running, that would be a $4k+ tractor all day long.

Thank you for all of the replies. This is all very helpful. I'll try and get more information in the coming days and try not to get my hopes up too high, but I have to admit I'm a little too excited about the idea already. :)

The most important thing is to assess the condition and completeness of the Elenco. One that is complete and in working condition is worth a good 3500 by itself.

I'm pretty sure it's in good shape. I'm hesitant to see it in that light though, I've always been a guy who never saw a "parts" tractor. :) I'm also getting the feeling that the present owner would like to be assured that the tractor is fixed and used, so if I start a negotiation I guess that's in my favor.

I expect that the Elenco would work on the tractor that it is on now.

That's one cool machine, I have never
owned one but have gathered that the
general consensus was that if you need a
4wd tractor for heavy work then look
newer for price and reliability. At the
price your talking tho it's pretty
affordable, but maybe still not suited
for heavy loader work. And that Wagner
loader is a heavy loader for its day, we
have one on an NAA that we used to use.
They have downpressure and will lift way
more than the tractor should.

I would not buy it to use it, I fear it would b e a money pit.

I have to admit, the cool factor is the main reason I want it. :) Beyond that I would find it useful for feeding round bales. Fairly light work but filling a need that has been long been inadequately filled.

Probably would survive that well with a
bit of care, I have a feeling that when
people try and dig with them and really
use the full traction of 4wd is when it
starts to be expensive!

Well after twisting in the wind all summer and fall, it now sits in my yard. :) It's a little rougher than I first thought, but nothing I can't fix (I hope, lol).

I spent a lot of time on one of them as a kid. Those big tires look so much better on them than the wimpy ag tires that are usually put on them. The farmer that owned it dug a foot of dirt for our driveway with it. These days that would be done with an excavator. It takes a tough machine to break compacted dirt by pushing into it.
