Ford 641 Rear inner axle seal replacement

Hello all,

I have a 641 that has a leaking rear seal (inner). I ordered the new seal and also new brakes. The I&T manual I have leaves a lot to be desired in how to change the seal. I have the hub off, but how do I get to the inner axle seal? Basically what I am asking is how do I remove the brakes and get to the seal? I've read some about it but I cant find anything on step by step removal of the parts to get to it.

Do I need to unbolt the 7/8" bolts on the back of the housing to remove the hub/brakes?
Is there an axle nut (mine has what appears to be a solid metal "shield" where an axle nut would be, does that remove?) to loosen first?
Does anyone have a detailed diagram of the rear hub/brakes/etc?

Thanks for all your help. I have scoured the internet to try to find out how to do this and cant find out how to proceed.

Thanks, Sean. Seeing that diagram is helpful. I don't really have internet access on the farm, so looking up things is a hit and miss battle while "hands on".

It appears to me that all I need to remove are parts #24 (remove axle as well, once all of #24 have been removed) and gain access to #22 in order to get the brake assembly off in order to get to #25. If I am looking at the
diagram right, it appears I won't have to pull #26 off to get to the inner seal. Am I seeing that correctly?

Sorry to come off as such a newbie, but I am. I've never worked on a tractor before (or anything heavy equipment)...this is all new to me.

Is #22 the anchor pin that everyone has trouble with? I am not working on the tractor at this moment, so I can't give an example of what I see. I don't recall seeing #22 last night after I got the hub off. I also will be
changing the brakes while fixing the seal.

Thanks again!

I wanted to just give an update:

I removed all the "axle to wheel" nuts and the entire assembly came out. I knew there was going to be some oil come out, but not as much that did. I began to clear out the area to put the new seal in only to discover I didn't have a seal in there. No wonder it was leaking and I had no left brake...

Anyway, I put the seal in, rebolted it back up, and the leak stopped immediately. I re-attached the brakes and the pedal is 100x better. I had to pause my work, but the next step is to clean the area with parts cleaner and put on my new pads.

Hopefully I put the seal in the right spot ;)

hat? The axle came out when wheel nuts removed??!! Without removing the bearing retainer??!!

I had to remove part #24 (there were several of them on the
back of the 'wheel'). Im not sure if you're referring to that or
lug nuts when you say "wheel nut" or part #24 (BOLT -
WHEEL TO AXLE SHAFT). Once I removed all the #24 bolts,
the entire axle removed.

I have replaced the inner seal more than once on the old Fords. You have to split the collar and press it off. I have learned to take the axle to the welding shop and let them press the new collar on with their giant press. Made life on my wore out joints much easier!

Isn't that the outer seal you're referring to?

My part was actually #2 on the diagram, not #27...that was my mistake earlier.

ey, bud, "axle to wheel nuts" was YOUR term, not mine, so You are the only one knowing what that means!
