Ford 9N Capabilities?

Scobey

New User
Just wondering if a 9N is enough tractor to mow the tall weeds on my 10 acre property. I have a John Deere 503 Brush Hog.

This is the 9N on CL I am considering.

"1939 Ford 9N. Runs great, 12Volt Conversion, New PTO shaft and over riding clutch. Asking 3000 Obo need it gone asap."

Thanks

It's way too high.
Double what it's worth.
Skip the Ns and buy a Hundred or thousand Series. Much more capable tractor for not much more $.
You should be able to find a decent one with at least fair tires for that kind of money

Pay attention to Ultradog!! The 9N is overpriced and does not have the flexability of a later model. Something with a independent PTO is best

Most of the decent looking 9Ns on CL around here are in the 2-3K Range. This one has been on there for months, and the property I have a 641 with FEL, but it has too many problems due to age and neglect. I'm not sure what to do with that thing at the moment, but I don't have the time to deal with it, before the weeds take over. It also would not bother me to get rid of the bigger 641 with FEL, if the smaller tractor can do the mowing.

(quoted from post at 09:43:02 06/03/16) Whereabouts are you located?
And do you have the means to haul one any distance?

Northern Colorado - Fort Collins.
Hauling is no problem, got the truck and trailer for it.

You are right.
Tractors seem to be rather expensive there.
My BIL lives near Longmont and has asked me
to help him find an N for small jobs. Back
bladeing, pulling out shrubs, etc.
I search craigslist for one on occasion and
they all seem very high compared to here.
If you don't mind a road trip start
searching CL in the Joplin MO, Tulsa, OKC,
E KS, N TX areas. I regularly watch the ads
all over the Midwest and think the tractors
in that part of the country are cheaper than
most other regions.
Have to consider fuel in the equation but
you'd still come out ahead and have more
tractor.

While most will tell ya forget an N, I'll just say, it will do the job. It's done that same job and more here on our 50 acres for 8 years now.

That being said, for $3,000 I'm gonna guess you could get a hundred series or better. There will always be a "better" Tractor out there.

I agree with Ultra for that price you should be able to find an 801 series which is a lot more tractor and a lot better and if you find a 861 model or even a 601 series 661 both have live PTO and you get away form the problematic fount mount distributor with the known to go bad square coil

If you don't find a hundred series Ford or similar, look for a Ferguson. You can probably get a TO-35 for the money you are talking about, and maybe even a 35 Deluxe, which has live PTO and live hydraulics. All the 35's have six forward and two reverse.

A 9n would be a descent choice for 10 acres . They are light , turn quick , and mow under low tree limbs .

They do not have much power but 10 acres is about right . A 9n does not have position control and is harder to use for jobs other than plowing . I used a chain to limit the down height and did OK mowing . I just had to keep adjusting the chain for different locations .

The 9n , 2n , and 8n do not have live hydraulics so you can't raise the mower without spinning the blades . You also stop the mower if you push in the clutch to stop the tractor .

If you can now 2 - 3 times or more per year the N's do OK . If you want to now just once a year you will wish you had a bigger tractor . You might even want to pay someone to do the first cutting on an over grown pasture .

An average 8n sells for about $2000 and the 9n/2n for about $1500 . You would be further ahead to pay someone to fix your 641. Anything that runs and has a bucket is $5K . You will find that you use the bucket more than the mower .

Unless you just found a great deal under $1500 I would keep looking .

Tell you what, haul that 641 up here and I'll swap you a decent running 8N for it! Don't look great and the tires are weather checked but I plowed the garden with it this spring and did a lot of back blade with it too.

Actually being honest if you have 3K to dump into buying a 9N why not dump that money into fixing the 641? Remove the FEL and that makes a pretty decent mowing tractor and it will handle a bigger mower.
